Description

Sacred Valley, Maras, Moray, and Machu Picchu: An Inca legacy that defied time On our 2-day tour of the Sacred Valley, Maras, Moray, and Machu Picchu, you will have the opportunity to see the sunrise over Machu Picchu, especially if you visit during the dry season. Explore the ancient religious sites in the Sacred Valley, meet local Andean artisans, and learn about Peru’s rich culture. You will pass through charming villages, see ancient Inca terraces, and visit one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. A local guide will share their knowledge, and you will enjoy stunning views of the Andes mountains and beautiful landscapes. After exploring the Sacred Valley, you will travel on one of the most scenic railways in the world, following the path of the Urubamba River.

Embark on a captivating two-day journey through the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu, immersing yourself in the wonders of the Inca Empire. This comprehensive tour takes you through the most iconic Inca sites in the Cusco region, starting with a visit to Chinchero, famous for its vibrant textile tradition. Marvel at the unique terraces of Moray, an ancient agricultural site, and admire the historic salt mines of Maras. The day ends in Ollantaytambo, a town with a rich Inca history.
On the second day, the tour culminates with a visit to the mystical Machu Picchu, an impressive citadel nestled high in the Andes. This unique experience offers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the cultural and historical significance of these Inca monuments.
Along the way, you will meet local communities in their traditional clothing, explore colorful markets, and immerse yourself in the living culture of the Andean villages. Your adventure will be even more memorable with a picturesque train ride to Aguas Calientes, passing through the majestic Urubamba Canyon and following the Vilcanota River, one of Peru’s greatest natural wonders.

This morning, we will pick you up early from your hotel and head to the beautiful town of Chinchero (3,762 m / 12,343 ft), where you will find amazing Inca constructions and a textile art demonstration. We will then continue to the impressive archaeological site of Moray (3,385 m / 11,106 ft), which consists of a series of circular terraces believed to have been used for experimental agriculture and to study the growth of different crops at different altitudes.

Next, we will head to the famous Salineras de Maras, a set of over 3,000 pools that have been used since pre-Hispanic times to extract salt from the naturally flowing salty water in the area. This salt has a pink hue and is known for its healing properties and delicious taste. It makes a great gift for someone at home and is perfect for cooking.

We will then go to Urubamba for a buffet lunch featuring various traditional dishes of your choice. After a well-deserved break, we will continue to the “last living Inca city,” Ollantaytambo, known for its imposing architecture, including temples, water fountains, and high terraces surrounded by spectacular Andean landscapes. Here you can walk along its cobblestone streets, capture incredible photos, and learn more about its history with our expert guide.

Later, we will head to the station to board the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes. During the journey, you will see beautiful glaciers and snow-capped peaks, as well as fertile green valleys and Inca agricultural terraces on both sides of the valley. Once in Aguas Calientes, you will go to your hotel to check-in.

In the afternoon, you will have free time to relax, and in the evening, you can enjoy a delicious dinner at the best restaurant before going to bed.

Once at Machu Picchu, your guide will take you to a strategic point where you can observe the Inca architecture of Machu Picchu and take the best postcard photos. Then, you will begin your guided tour of the main sectors of the citadel, which will last for 2 hours. At the end of the tour, you will have some free time to continue taking photos and explore anything you haven’t yet seen. • To receive the student discount, travelers must have a valid ID with the following:

✓ Note about the ISIC Card:

  • Although the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is recognized in many countries, it is not accepted by the Peruvian government for student discounts at Machu Picchu. Just as a passport cannot be replaced by any other type of ID for international procedures, the student card cannot be replaced by an ISIC or any other document for discounts in Peru.
The Peruvian government’s policy is strict regarding student accreditation. It is essential to present a card that meets these criteria in order to qualify for student-priced tickets, as you will be asked to show your physical student card upon entering Machu Picchu. If you do not meet these requirements upon arrival at Machu Picchu, there is a significant risk that you will be denied entry and will have to pay the full ticket price, based on availability. ✓ Events Beyond Our Control:

  • Any events beyond our control that make any part of the trip impossible, such as strikes, protests, flight cancellations, weather conditions, or overbooking of hotels or flights. In any of these cases, we will suggest alternative arrangements (if available) to make the trip possible. Any costs associated with these alternative arrangements will be the responsibility of the traveler.

✓ Recommendations:
We highly recommend that you fully understand all the booking and cancellation policies before making your payment to ensure your investment is protected and that you have a smooth booking experience for your Machu Picchu excursion.

✓ Informational Meeting or Briefing:

All informational meetings and briefings are held one evening before your trip begins at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 6:00 p.m. These meetings last approximately 30 minutes. If you cannot attend, you will need to arrange another time by email or call.

✓ Payment of the Trekking Balance (in Cusco):

If you still have an outstanding balance, you must pay it 1 day before your trek/tour, otherwise, your trip reservation will not be confirmed. If possible, it would be greatly appreciated if you could pay the balance in cash, either in U.S. dollars or local currency, at our office in Cusco or during the briefing time. You can withdraw money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in U.S. dollars or soles). You can also pay by credit/debit card or through IZIPAY, online or in person, but there will be a 5% service charge applied by our payment gateway (Niubiz) and IZIPAY.

✓ Pick-up of Clients:

Please note: All pick-ups are done within the city of Cusco, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location. Our guide or staff will confirm the pick-up time with you one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pick-up time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an ancient city with many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets with no access for transportation or on long and steep hills, making it difficult to transfer your luggage. We highly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

✓ Health:

If you have any medical restrictions for some or all of the activities detailed in your reservation, please contact your doctor and inquire about the risks of participating in such activities.

✓ Weather:

Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this does not prevent rain in June or sunshine in December, so be prepared, no matter what month you are trekking. Be sure to have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Many people forget gloves, but the cold and humidity make walking unpleasant.
Also, be prepared for four seasons. Trekking in the Andes involves several microclimates, and you need to be prepared. Layers are always essential as they can be easily adjusted to different temperature changes. Be prepared with a warm jacket as the night will be cold.

✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Pain:

For trekkers who come directly to Cusco from sea level, we recommend arriving 2 days before your trek. Two of the most common health problems among tourists in Cusco are: altitude sickness (Soroche) and stomach pain caused by slow digestion.
Altitude sickness; some symptoms include headaches and nausea. There are some over-the-counter medications (pills) that help minimize the symptoms of this issue, such as Aspirin, Diamox, Soroichi Pill, Alti Vital, among others. If the symptoms persist, the next step is to use oxygen. In these circumstances, we have the equipment and staff ready to assist our trekkers.

Stomach pain; It is recommended to drink 3-4 liters of water a day. Your body will need this to stay hydrated. Hot drinks, such as coca leaf tea, are especially recommended. Also, soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy) are a good option. Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are also a good choice. In general, all foods that are easy to digest. Avoid drinking alcohol and smoking.

Make sure to sleep at least 8 hours and not overexert yourself. Keep your body at a proper temperature by wearing warm clothing to protect against the cold. During altitude acclimatization, there is a general rule to follow: eat as needed and drink plenty of fluids.

Medical Restrictions:
Clients must inform their travel agency of any medical restrictions they may have before the start of their trip. Some examples of medical restrictions include: allergies, special diets, any medication the client is currently taking, and health issues. In case of severe medical restrictions, we recommend consulting with your doctor to approve your participation in the trek. The information you send us will be very important as it will help us design a plan to ensure you have a more pleasant and worry-free trip.

Lost Items:
Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to collect everything once you leave our transport, campsites, or restaurants. You are the sole responsible party for your belongings during the tour.

This valley was a sacred area for the Incas as it encompassed a vast territory that was very productive for agriculture. The main products cultivated by the Incas were: corn, potatoes, olluco, quinoa, and coca leaves, which were considered a sacred plant.

Many people arrive in the same way as you; along the route, the only place higher than Cusco is Chinchero, and the other places are at lower altitudes. Nonetheless, the guide will always be attentive to you.

The tour of the Sacred Valley is one of the most comfortable, however, at each visit site, walking is required, as it is the only way to visit the archaeological sites. If someone has difficulty walking, I recommend taking a private tour service, so they can go at their own pace without having to follow a group.

No, it is not necessary to buy tickets in advance for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. All tickets for the tourist sites can be purchased on the same day of the excursion.

The tour is available year-round, always subject to weather conditions.

We recommend booking the tour in advance as we have two seasons (high and low), which differ in the number of tourists we accommodate. For this reason, it is better to book early to avoid any unexpected issues related to tour availability.

The weather in Machu Picchu can vary, with temperatures ranging from 12°C to 24°C. It is recommended to wear layered clothing to adjust to temperature changes throughout the day.

These are the mountains that surround the Inca Citadel. Huayna Picchu is located at 2,720 meters above sea level and offers a spectacular view of the archaeological site, as well as several Inca ruins along the way.
Machu Picchu Mountain is located at 3,082 meters above sea level and serves as another viewpoint towards the famous historical sanctuary. However, the hike to its summit is significantly less challenging than Huayna Picchu Mountain.
To trek to either of these mountains, it is necessary to purchase an additional entrance ticket well in advance. For more information, please contact your travel agent.

Machu Picchu is located at the edge of the Peruvian high jungle and the Andes, at 2,430 meters above sea level. The temperatures in this region range from 12°C to 24°C, with a warm and humid climate during the day and colder temperatures at night. The climatic conditions in Machu Picchu are characterized by two main seasons:

Dry Season: This is considered the coldest time of the year. This period runs from May to September. Sunny and bright days are expected throughout this season.

Rainy Season: Occurs between December and April, with these being the rainiest months of the year. However, the rainy season usually has a transition with light rainfall between October and December.

It is important to note that the climatic conditions in this region can change drastically, so we recommend familiarizing yourself with all the details and preparing the perfect packing list for Machu Picchu before venturing to this wonder.

Yes, it is recommended to book at least 1 month in advance, especially if you wish to include access to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, as the tickets are limited.

To get to Cusco, the most common way is to take an international flight to Lima (the capital of Peru) and then take a domestic flight to Cusco. First, take a flight from your country of origin to Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima. Lima is Peru’s main hub for international air connections.

Once in Lima, you can take a domestic flight to Cusco. The flight from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Several airlines offer this route, such as LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air.

If you prefer not to fly, you can take a bus from Lima to Cusco. This road trip can take between 20 and 24 hours. However, flying is more recommended due to the comfort and time savings.

If you are coming from nearby countries like Chile, Argentina, Colombia, or Ecuador, you might also find direct flights to Cusco from some of their main cities, although they are not as frequent as flights to Lima.

All luggage that is not necessary should be left in Cusco. All hotels in Cusco are accustomed to and prepared for storing luggage. If you don’t have a place to store your luggage, you can leave it at our office until your adventure is over. We will make sure your luggage is stored safely, so don’t worry!

To enter Machu Picchu, you must arrive at the designated entry time on your ticket and show your passport.

The only restrooms are located at the main entrance of the Machu Picchu citadel. There are no restrooms inside the archaeological complex.
