Manu Reserved Zone 6D/5N: A Natural Treasure of the Amazon

The Manu Reserved Zone is a biodiversity paradise and one of the richest and most protected ecosystems on the planet. Located in the southeast of Peru, in the Amazonian territories of Cusco and Madre de Dios, this natural sanctuary spans more than 1.5 million hectares and forms part of the larger Manu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its exceptional ecological value.

This 6-day, 5-night expedition invites you to immerse yourself in the true heart of the Amazon rainforest. The Manu Reserved Zone offers travelers a rare opportunity to explore pristine jungles, navigate winding rivers, and witness an astounding variety of wildlifeโ€”macaws, giant river otters, monkeys, caimans, and, with some luck, jaguars. It is one of the few places on Earth where nature remains virtually untouched, making it a biodiversity hotspot of global importance.

During this unforgettable Amazon rainforest tour, youโ€™ll hike through lush primary forests, sleep in comfortable eco-lodges deep in the jungle, and participate in guided wildlife observations led by experienced naturalist guides. Youโ€™ll also visit clay licks where hundreds of colorful parrots and macaws gatherโ€”an incredible spectacle of sound and color.

The Manu Reserved Zone is ideal for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking a truly immersive Peru jungle adventure. Each day brings new sights, sounds, and encounters that will leave you inspired and connected to the wild rhythms of the Amazon.

This journey is more than a tourโ€”itโ€™s a profound reconnection with nature and a commitment to sustainable travel and conservation. Join us and explore one of the last great wildernesses on Earth.

If you’re one of those people looking to explore the most impressive routes of the Amazon, this is the trip you’ve been waiting for. Whether you decide to join solo, as a couple, or with friends, our experience will take you through the most spectacular trails, where the jungle comes to life and every corner is a new discovery.

The Manu Reserved Zone is one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America, located in the southeast of Peru, in the Amazon region of the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios. This area, which is part of the Manu National Park, spans a vast territory that includes a wide variety of ecosystems, from the high Andes mountains to the lowland Amazon rainforest.

Exceptional Biodiversity:
The Manu Reserved Zone is home to an astonishing diversity of life. With over 1,000 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, and an incredible variety of reptiles, insects, and plants, this region is considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world. It is a refuge for rare and endangered species, such as the jaguar, giant river otter, and iconic macaws.

Indigenous Communities:
The zone is also home to indigenous communities like the Matsigenka, who live in harmony with nature and possess a deep knowledge of the regionโ€™s flora and fauna. These communities actively participate in the conservation of the area and responsible ecotourism.

Controlled Access and Conservation:
To preserve its biodiversity, access to the Reserved Zone is strictly controlled. Entry is only allowed through authorized guides and ecotourism agencies committed to conservation. This approach ensures that visitors can enjoy the region without negatively impacting its fragile ecosystem.

Fauna and Flora Observation:
The opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat is one of the biggest attractions of the Manu. You may spot everything from majestic red and green macaws to howler monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and, if you’re lucky, even a jaguar or tapir. The region is also home to exotic bird species like the hoatzin, known for its prehistoric appearance.

A Refuge for the Planet:
The Manu Reserved Zone is crucial for the global health of the planet. As part of the Amazon basin, it helps regulate the climate and plays a vital role in the fight against climate change due to its ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

The first day of our unforgettable adventure in the Manu jungle will start early, when we pick you up around 5:45 a.m. at your hotel in Cusco with our private transport. Our journey will begin by crossing the majestic Andean mountains, a breathtaking landscape that will accompany us for most of the trip.

We will continue our route toward the picturesque village of Huancarani, where we will explore the fascinating Chullpas de Ninamarca (3,500 m / 11,482 feet), remnants of an ancient pre-Inca cemetery belonging to the Lupaca culture. Then, we will head toward Paucartambo (2,906 m / 9,534 feet), known as the “folklore capital of Cusco.” This small colonial town has managed to preserve its rich traditions over the centuries, keeping its cultural legacy alive despite the passage of time.

At lunchtime, we will reach the Abra de Acjanaco (3,560 m / 11,679 feet), the gateway to the Manu National Park, one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America. From here, we will begin a winding descent, surrounded by the mysterious mist covering the Cloud Forest, one of the most fascinating regions of the park. Along this stretch, we will have the opportunity to observe species such as the woolly monkey, as well as a great variety of birds, orchids, and ferns that adorn this unique ecosystem. This area, with its lush flora and fauna, is a true biodiversity sanctuary, offering a natural spectacle that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

At the end of the day, we will arrive at the home of the emblematic cock-of-the-rock, the national bird of Peru, which congregates in this place for a spectacular social display, creating an amazing display of colors and sounds that only the jungle can offer. It will certainly be a magical moment.

Finally, around 5:00 p.m., we will arrive at the beautiful lodge, where we will spend our first night, surrounded by the tranquility of the jungle and ready to continue exploring this wonderful environment the next day.

In the afternoon, we will have time to explore some trails that pass through the pristine tropical rainforest, where our guide will lead us to discover the fascinating ecosystem that surrounds us.

One of the most awaited activities of the day will be our visit to the Cocha Otorongo lake, a magical place where we will have access to the observation docks and a 20-meter high tower in the rainforest canopy, from where we can observe wildlife in all its splendor. As night falls, we will have the option of a night excursion, a guided walk through the forest where we will explore the nocturnal creatures that come to life under the moonlight. The sound of tree frogs and forest insects will accompany this unique experience, as we venture deeper into the jungle to look for nocturnal animals like the black caiman, the olingo kinkajou, or even the ocelot.

Our guide or staff will confirm the pick-up time one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pick-up time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an ancient city with many narrow, cobblestone streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets with no transport access or on steep, long hills, making it difficult to transport your luggage. We strongly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

  • Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to collect everything once you leave our transport, campsites, or restaurants. You are solely responsible for your belongings during the tour.

โœ“ Weather:

  • Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Typically, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this does not prevent rain in June or sunshine in December, so be prepared as it can be very hot in the jungle during the dry season.

โœ“ Altitude sickness (soroche) and stomach aches:

For those travelers coming to Cusco directly from sea level, we recommend arriving 2 days before your walk. Two of the most common health issues among tourists in Cusco are:
Altitude sickness (soroche) and stomach aches caused by slow digestion. Symptoms of altitude sickness include headache and nausea.

  • For stomach aches: It is recommended to drink between 3-4 liters of water per day. Your body will need it to stay hydrated. Hot drinks like coca leaf tea are especially recommended. Soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy) are also good options. Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are also a good choice. In general, foods that are easy to digest are best. Do not drink alcohol or smoke.

Try to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid excessive exercise. Keep your body at the proper temperature using warm clothing to protect against the cold. During the acclimatization period, the general rule is to eat as needed and drink plenty of liquids.

Most people travel to Cusco by air. Keep in mind that Cusco airport only operates domestic flights. Therefore, if you are traveling directly from abroad to Lima, you will need to pick up your luggage at the airport and check it in again for your flight to Cusco. There are four airlines that fly round trip between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, Star Perรบ. All of these airlines offer similar flight schedules and services, but we generally recommend LATAM Airlines. You also have the option to travel to Cusco by land. Keep in mind that the trip from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 24 hours.

We offer a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes, such as rice, chicken, beef, salads, potatoes, vegetables, delicious fruits, all freshly prepared by our local chef. We also have excellent vegetarian options and accommodate specific dietary requests with proper preparation and good communication.
