Manu National Park: A Journey to the Heart of the Amazon Jungle

The Manu Reserved Area is a living treasure of the Amazon rainforest and one of the most biologically diverse places on the planet. Covering more than 1.5 million hectares of tropical jungle in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios, it forms part of the larger Manu National Park, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding ecological value.

This vast protected territory is home to thousands of plant and animal species, including jaguars, giant otters, tapirs, macaws, and hundreds of types of butterflies and amphibians. Its unique geography—ranging from lowland rainforest to cloud forest and Andean grasslands—makes the Manu National Park a global biodiversity hotspot and a paradise for wildlife watching.

Travelers seeking authentic eco-tourism in Peru will find unforgettable experiences here: river journeys through untouched jungle, visits to salt licks where animals gather, and guided walks with local experts who share insights into the complex ecosystem and its traditional uses.

The Manu National Park offers more than just breathtaking scenery—it is a sanctuary where nature thrives and conservation is a way of life. Visiting this region means stepping into the heart of the Amazon, where every sound, color, and breath of air connects you to one of Earth’s last great wildernesses.

If you are one of those people looking to explore the most impressive routes of the Amazon, this is the trip you’ve been waiting for. Whether you decide to join alone, with a partner, or with friends, our experience will take you through the most spectacular trails, where the jungle comes to life, and every corner is a new discovery.
The Manu Reserved Area is one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America, located in the southeast of Peru, in the Amazon region, in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios. This area, which is part of the Manu National Park, spans a vast territory that includes a wide variety of ecosystems, from the high mountains of the Andes to the low Amazon rainforest.

Exceptional Biodiversity:
The Manu Reserved Area is home to an astonishing diversity of life. With over 1,000 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, and an incredible variety of reptiles, insects, and plants, this region is considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world. It is a refuge for rare and endangered species, such as the jaguar, the giant river otter, and the iconic macaws.

Indigenous Communities:
The area is also home to indigenous communities like the Matsigenka, who live in harmony with nature and possess a deep knowledge of the region’s flora and fauna. These communities actively participate in the conservation of the area and in responsible ecotourism.

Controlled Access and Conservation:
To preserve its biodiversity, access to the Reserved Area is strictly controlled. Entry is only allowed through authorized guides and ecotourism agencies committed to conservation. This approach ensures that visitors can enjoy the region without causing negative impact on its fragile ecosystem.

Wildlife and Flora Observation:
The opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat is one of the biggest attractions of Manu. You can spot majestic red and green macaws, howler monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and, if you’re lucky, even a jaguar or a tapir. The region is also home to exotic bird species, such as the hoatzin, known for its prehistoric appearance.

A Refuge for the Planet:
The Manu Reserved Area is vital for the global health of the planet. As part of the Amazon basin, it helps regulate the climate and plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change, due to its ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

The first day of our unforgettable adventure in the Manu jungle will begin early, when we pick you up around 5:45 a.m. at your hotel in Cusco with our private transport. Our journey will begin by crossing the majestic Andean mountains, a stunning landscape that will accompany us for much of the trip.

We will continue our route to the picturesque village of Huancarani, where we will explore the fascinating funerary chullpas of Ninamarca (3,500 m / 11,482 feet), remnants of an ancient pre-Incan cemetery belonging to the Lupaca culture. Afterward, we will head to Paucartambo (2,906 m / 9,534 feet), known as the “folkloric capital of Cusco.” This small colonial town has managed to preserve its rich traditions over the centuries, keeping its cultural legacy alive despite the passage of time.

At lunchtime, we will reach the Acjanaco pass (3,560 m / 11,679 feet), the gateway to the Manu National Park, one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America. From here, we will begin a winding descent, enveloped in the mysterious fog that covers the Cloud Forest, one of the most fascinating regions of the park. Along this stretch, we will have the opportunity to observe species such as the woolly monkey, as well as a wide variety of birds, orchids, and ferns that adorn this unique ecosystem. This area, with its lush flora and fauna, is a true refuge of biodiversity, offering a natural spectacle found nowhere else in the world.

At the end of the day, we will arrive at the home of the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird, which gathers in this area in a spectacular social display, creating an amazing array of colors and sounds that only the jungle can offer. It will undoubtedly be a magical moment.

Finally, around 5:00 p.m., we will arrive at the beautiful lodge, where we will spend our first night, surrounded by the tranquility of the jungle and ready to continue exploring this marvelous environment the following day.

Day highlights

  • Walk through the Cloud Forest of Manu National Park: a fascinating journey through one of the most biodiverse and mysterious areas of the jungle, surrounded by fog and lush vegetation.

If you decide to pay only the deposit, the remaining balance can be paid upon arrival in Cusco, one day before the tour departure.

✓ Tour Balance Payment (in Cusco):

  • If you still have an outstanding balance, it must be paid the day before your hike/tour. Otherwise, your trip reservation will not be confirmed. If possible, we would greatly appreciate it if you pay the tour balance in cash, either in US dollars or local currency, at our office in Cusco or at the briefing. You can also pay by credit/debit card or through IZIPAY, online or in person, but you will incur a 5% service charge issued by our payment gateway (Niubiz) and IZIPAY.

✓ Pick-up of Clients:
Please note:

  • All pick-ups are done within the city of Cusco, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location. Our guide or staff will confirm the pick-up time the day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pick-up time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an old city with many narrow and cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets without transportation access or on long and steep hills, which can make it difficult to transport your luggage. We strongly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

✓ Lost Items:

  • Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to collect everything once you leave our transport, campsites, or restaurants. You are the only person responsible for your belongings during the tour.

✓ Weather:

  • Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this does not prevent rain in June or sunshine in December, so be prepared as it can be very hot in the jungle during the dry season.

✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Pain:

For those hikers coming directly to Cusco from sea level, we recommend arriving 2 days before your hike. Two of the most common health issues among tourists in Cusco are:

  • Altitude sickness (Soroche): Some symptoms are headaches and nausea.
  • Stomach pain: It is recommended to drink 3-4 liters of water a day. Your body will need it to stay hydrated. Hot drinks like coca leaf tea are highly recommended. Soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy) are also a good option. Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are also good choices. In general, all foods that are easy to digest. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Make sure to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid too much exercise. Keep your body at an appropriate temperature by wearing warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold. During the adjustment to altitude, there is a general rule to follow: eat only what is necessary and drink plenty of fluids.

Most people travel to Cusco by air. Keep in mind that the Cusco airport only operates domestic flights. Therefore, if you are coming directly from abroad to Lima, you will need to pick up your luggage at the airport and check it again for your flight to Cusco. There are four airlines that fly back and forth between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, and Star Perú. All of these airlines offer similar flight schedules and services, but we generally recommend LATAM Airlines. You also have the option to travel to Cusco by land. Keep in mind that the trip from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 24 hours.

We offer a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes, such as rice, chicken, beef, salads, potatoes, vegetables, delicious, and fruits, freshly prepared by our local chef. We also have excellent vegetarian options and accommodate specific dietary requests with proper preparation and good communication.
