Manu: The Wild Heart of the Amazon, A Refuge of Biodiversity

Manu National Park Peru is a natural destination of exceptional value, offering travelers a rare and immersive journey into one of the world’s last untouched rainforests. Located in southeastern Peru, this vast reserve—recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site—encompasses the Manu Reserved Zone, a core area of strict protection and extraordinary ecological diversity.

Embarking on a tour to Manu National Park Peru means entering a world where wildlife roams freely, giant trees tower above, and each sound and color is a living testament to the richness of the Amazon rainforest. The region is home to over 1,000 species of birds, hundreds of mammals, amphibians, and reptiles, as well as vibrant flora with deep medicinal and cultural significance.

This tour offers more than a simple nature trip—it’s a deeply meaningful experience. Visitors travel by boat through jungle rivers, walk along trails in primary forest, and spend the night in rustic eco-lodges surrounded by natural symphonies. Guided by expert naturalists, you’ll witness scenes like colorful macaws at clay licks, giant river otters in oxbow lakes, and perhaps even the elusive jaguar hidden in the foliage.

A journey to Manu National Park Peru is both an adventure and a conscious act of conservation. It supports local communities and reinforces the importance of protecting one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth. For those seeking a true eco-tourism in Peru experience, this is the ultimate wildlife expedition—a powerful connection to nature that leaves a lasting impact.

If you are one of those people who seek to explore the most impressive routes of the Amazon, this is the trip you’ve been waiting for. Whether you decide to join alone, as a couple, or with friends, our experience will take you through the most spectacular trails, where the jungle comes to life and every corner is a new discovery.
The Manu Reserved Zone is one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America, located in the southeastern part of Peru, in the Amazon region, within the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios. This area, which is part of the Manu National Park, covers a vast territory that includes a wide variety of ecosystems, from the high mountains of the Andes to the low tropical rainforest of the Amazon.

Exceptional Biodiversity:
The Manu Reserved Zone is home to an astonishing diversity of life. With over 1,000 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, and an incredible variety of reptiles, insects, and plants, this region is considered one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. It is a sanctuary for rare and endangered species, such as the jaguar, giant river otter, and the iconic macaws.

Indigenous Communities:
The area is also home to indigenous communities like the Matsigenka, who live in harmony with nature and have profound knowledge of the region’s flora and fauna. These communities actively participate in the conservation of the area and responsible ecotourism.

Controlled Access and Conservation:
To preserve its biodiversity, access to the Manu Reserved Zone is strictly controlled. Entry is only allowed through authorized guides and ecotourism agencies committed to conservation. This approach ensures that visitors can enjoy the region without negatively impacting its fragile ecosystem.

Wildlife and Flora Observation:
The opportunity to observe animals in their natural habitat is one of the greatest attractions of Manu. It’s possible to spot majestic red and green macaws, howler monkeys, capybaras, caimans, and if you’re lucky, even a jaguar or a tapir. The region is also home to exotic bird species, such as the hoatzin, known for its prehistoric appearance.

A Refuge for the Planet:
The Manu Reserved Zone is vital for the global health of the planet. As part of the Amazon basin, it helps regulate the climate and plays a crucial role in the fight against climate change due to its ability to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen.

The first day of our unforgettable adventure in the Manu jungle will begin early, as we pick you up around 5:45 a.m. at your hotel in Cusco with our private transport. Our journey will begin by crossing the majestic Andean mountains, a stunning landscape that will accompany us for much of the trip.

We will continue our route towards the picturesque village of Huancarani, where we will explore the fascinating funeral chullpas of Ninamarca (3,500 m / 11,482 feet), remnants of an ancient pre-Inca cemetery belonging to the Lupaca culture. Afterward, we will head to Paucartambo (2,906 m / 9,534 feet), known as the “folkloric capital of Cusco.” This small colonial town has managed to preserve its rich traditions throughout the centuries, keeping its cultural heritage alive despite the passage of time.

At lunchtime, we will reach the Abra de Acjanaco (3,560 m / 11,679 feet), the entrance gate to Manu National Park, one of the most protected and biodiverse natural areas in South America. From here, we will begin a winding descent, surrounded by the mysterious mist that covers the Cloud Forest, one of the most fascinating regions of the park. Along this stretch, we will have the opportunity to observe species such as the woolly monkey, as well as a wide variety of birds, orchids, and ferns that adorn this unique ecosystem. This area, with its lush flora and fauna, is a true biodiversity refuge, offering a natural spectacle that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

At the end of the day, we will reach the home of the iconic Andean cock-of-the-rock, the national bird of Peru, which congregates in this place in a spectacular social courtship display, creating an amazing array of colors and sounds that only the jungle can offer. Without a doubt, it will be a magical moment.

Finally, around 5:00 p.m., we will arrive at the beautiful lodge, where we will spend our first night, surrounded by the tranquility of the jungle and ready to continue exploring this wonderful environment the next day.

Our guide or staff will confirm the pickup time with you the day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an old city with many narrow, cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets with no access for transport or on long, steep inclines, which makes it difficult to transport your luggage. We strongly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

✓ Lost Items:

  • Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to collect everything once you leave our transport, camps, or restaurants. You are the only one responsible for your belongings during the tour.

✓ Weather:

  • Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this doesn’t prevent rain in June or sunshine in December, so prepare yourself as it can be very hot in the jungle during the dry season.

✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Pain:

For those hikers coming to Cusco directly from sea-level locations, we recommend arriving 2 days before your hike. Two of the most common health problems among tourists in Cusco are:

  • Altitude Sickness (Soroche): Symptoms include headaches and nausea.
  • Stomach Pain: It is recommended to drink 3-4 liters of water per day. Your body will need it to stay hydrated. Hot drinks such as coca leaf tea are highly recommended. Soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy foods) are also good options. Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are also a good choice. In general, foods that are easy to digest. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Make sure to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid too much exercise. Keep your body at an adequate temperature by wearing warm clothing to protect yourself from the cold. During the altitude adaptation process, a general rule is to eat only what’s necessary and drink plenty of liquids.

All of these airlines offer similar flight schedules and services, but we generally recommend LATAM Airlines. You also have the option of traveling to Cusco by land. Please note that the trip from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 24 hours.

We offer a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes, such as rice, chicken, beef, salads, potatoes, vegetables, delicious fruits, freshly prepared by our local chef.
