Ready for a journey that mixes culture, history and dreamlike landscapes? The Lares Trek + Short Inca Trail awaits you.
Day 1: Cusco | Calca - Lares Hot Springs - Cuncani - Abra Willkikasa - Kiswarani Village
Our exciting adventure begins early at 5:00 a.m., when we will pick you up from your accommodation. As the city wakes up, we will head towards the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After an hour and a half of travel, we will make a stop at the local market in Calca, where you can buy snacks, fruits, water, and any last-minute items. Then, we’ll continue for another two hours to Lares Hot Springs, where you’ll enjoy a nutritious breakfast with views of the towering mountains.
After breakfast, take a dip in the relaxing waters of Lares. These natural pools, with varying temperatures, have medicinal properties that help relieve stress, muscle, and bone pain.
With renewed energy, we will head to the starting point at Cuncani (3,800 m / 12,467 ft), where we will meet our team of muleteers and cooks. They will take care of the luggage, allowing you to walk light and enjoy the trek to the fullest.
On the way, we’ll marvel at the stunning Pacchayoc Waterfall, a natural spectacle like no other. We will continue through an area of beautiful lagoons, where a delicious lunch will be waiting, prepared by our cook in the mountains.
After recharging our energy, we will continue to the highest point of the day, Abra Willkikasa (4,400 m / 14,436 ft). From here, we’ll begin the descent for about an hour and a half until we reach the campsite at Kiswarani.
You will have time to explore this Andean village and learn about the traditions of its inhabitants. We will visit the local school, where the children speak Quechua, their mother tongue. If you like, you can bring small gifts such as toys or school supplies, which will be warmly received.
As night falls, we will enjoy a warm drink while gazing at the starry sky of the Andes. Finally, we will share a delicious dinner before retiring to our camp to rest and prepare for the next day’s adventure.

Our team will take care of setting up the tents, so you will have time to spend with the friendly locals. Later, your guide will take you to one of the community’s homes so you can get to know their daily life in these remote regions. This is a great opportunity to learn about traditional Andean agricultural techniques.

After lunch, we will take a private vehicle for a short 30-minute ride to Ollantaytambo, considered the most beautiful Inca town in the Sacred Valley.
Here, we will begin an uphill walk of approximately 40 minutes to the Pinkuylluna warehouses, an archaeological gem with spectacular views of the town and the Sacred Valley. From this privileged viewpoint, you will be able to enjoy stunning scenery while our guide shares fascinating information about the Inca granaries. Additionally, the guide will take the opportunity to capture amazing photos of you in this unique setting.
After the exploration, we will descend for 30 minutes to our hotel in Ollantaytambo, where we will spend the night.
In the evening, we will enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant, including an appetizer, a soup, and a main dish, with several options to choose from. During dinner, our guide will organize the details of the next day’s journey along the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

This train ride lasts approximately one hour, during which you can admire the landscapes of the Sacred Valley and the transition to the lush cloud forest.
We will disembark at the famous Km 104, where your hike begins (2,150 m / 7,053 ft). After crossing the Urubamba River on a picturesque pedestrian bridge, you will show your passport at the checkpoint and visit your first nearby Inca site. Please note that you will need your original passport to pass through the checkpoint.
Our first stop is a beautiful archaeological site called Chachabamba, where your guide will give you an introduction to Inca history and the Inca Trail. After exploring this stunning Inca site, we will walk along an ancient Inca trail.
The first section of the Inca Trail is a gradually inclined path for 4 hours, taking us to the Wiñay Wayna archaeological site. This is one of the most beautiful Inca sites along the Inca Trail. At this point, we will take time to explore this impressive archaeological site while enjoying spectacular views of the Andes. Here, you will also enjoy a delicious box lunch to recharge your energy.
Afterward, we will continue our hike to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) to catch our first glimpse of the Lost City of the Incas. This is a truly unforgettable view. We will arrive at the Sun Gate around 2:00 p.m., when the crowd at Machu Picchu will have dispersed, allowing us to enjoy this spot with fewer people around. From this unique viewpoint, you will have a great chance to capture some incredible photos.
Once we reach Machu Picchu, you will have time to take more photos from the observation platforms (House of the Guardian), where you can capture the famous postcard shots of Machu Picchu. You will arrive in the afternoon, when the archaeological area begins to empty, offering you a chance to take beautiful photos in the late afternoon light with fewer people in the shot. Take your time to enjoy this magical experience before taking the bus to Aguas Calientes to check in to your hotel. Afterward, you will have a delicious dinner, followed by time to stroll through this charming town, visit the hot springs, or simply head back to your hotel to rest after such an exciting day.

Today is the day to visit Machu Picchu. You will need to wake up early to make sure you beat the crowds and catch the first bus to Machu Picchu. The bus ride takes about 25 minutes.
Once at Machu Picchu, your guide will lead you to a strategic point where you can observe the Inca architecture of Machu Picchu and take the best postcard photos. You will then start the guided tour of the main areas of the citadel, which will last for about 2 hours. During this guided tour, you will learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.
At the end of the tour, you will have some free time to take more photos and explore any remaining areas. If you’re interested in hiking Huayna Picchu, your guide will show you where to start this hike, which will take no more than 2 hours round trip (must be booked in advance as spaces fill up and it costs $60 USD per person).
The Machu Picchu Mountain is another hiking option instead of Huayna Picchu. This hike is more challenging and takes at least 3 hours round trip (also with a cost of $60 USD per person).
Once you’ve enjoyed the exceptional views of Machu Picchu, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on the train departure time, you may also have time for shopping, sightseeing, or visiting the museum or hot springs.
The Expedition train will take you back to Ollantaytambo at either 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m. along the spectacular Urubamba River. As you approach Aguas Calientes, the canyon narrows, and the river has many beautiful sections of whitewater. Once back at Ollantaytambo, your driver will meet you at the train station and take you back to Cusco by car. You can expect to arrive at your hotel around 7:30 p.m.

✓ TIPS FOR YOUR CREW:
- Tipping is a norm in tourism or any excursion to Machu Picchu. While we pay good salaries to all our team members, something extra is always appreciated, especially considering the hard work they put in. Generally, group participants pool their tips to share among the porters, chefs, and the guide/assistant after the Machu Picchu visit.

- Contributes to the local economy. In tourist destinations and communities.
- Encourages excellent service: tips motivate the staff to continue providing exceptional support and hospitality.
- Creates positive relationships: fosters goodwill and strengthens the connection between trekkers and the team supporting them.

This document must be shown at the checkpoints along the route. Unfortunately, if you don’t bring your card, you won’t be able to enter Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu.

- Bring between 1.5 and 2 liters of water; consider a Camelbak or similar system. Choosing a water bottle that keeps water cold is essential.

Just as a passport cannot be replaced by any other type of identification for international procedures, the student card cannot be substituted by an ISIC or any other document for discounts in Peru.
The Peruvian government’s policy is strict about student accreditation. - All information meetings and briefings are held the afternoon before your trip begins at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 6:00 p.m. Your guide will also give you the duffle bag at this time. These meetings usually last between 30 and 45 minutes. If you cannot attend, you will need to coordinate another time via email or phone call.
✓ Balance Payment for the Trek (in Cusco):
- If you still have a balance to pay, it must be settled 1 day before your trek/tour, otherwise, your trip reservation will not be confirmed. If possible, we would greatly appreciate it if you could pay the balance in cash, either in U.S. dollars or local currency, at our office in Cusco or at the briefing time. You can withdraw money from several ATMs along Avenida Sol (either in U.S. dollars or Peruvian soles). You can also pay by credit/debit card or via IZIPAY, online or in person, but there will be a 5% service charge issued by our payment gateway (Niubiz) and IZIPAY.
✓ Customer Pickup:
- Please note, all pickups are done within the city of Cusco, but we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location. Our guide or staff will confirm the pickup time a day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an ancient city with many narrow, cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets with no access for transport or in long, steep inclines, which can make it difficult to transport your luggage. We strongly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.
✓ Health:
- If you have medical restrictions for any of the activities detailed in your booking, please consult your doctor and ask about the risks of participating in such activities.
✓ Weather:
- Of course, the weather is unpredictable. Generally, the dry season in Cusco is from April to October, but this doesn’t prevent rain in June or sunshine in December, so be prepared. No matter what month you’re hiking, make sure to have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Many people forget the gloves, but the cold and humidity can make walking very unpleasant.
Also, be prepared for four seasons. Hiking in the Andes involves various microclimates, so you need to be ready. Layers are always essential because they’re easy to adjust to different temperature changes. Make sure to bring a warm jacket as the nights will be cold.
✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Pain:
For trekkers coming directly to Cusco from sea level, we recommend arriving 2 days before your trek. Two of the most common health problems among tourists in Cusco are: Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and stomach pain caused by slow digestion. Altitude sickness symptoms include headaches and nausea. Some over-the-counter medications (pills) can help minimize the symptoms, such as Aspirin, Diamox, Soroichi Pill, Alti Vital, among others. If symptoms persist, the next step is to use oxygen. In such cases, we have the equipment and staff ready to assist our trekkers.
- Stomach pain: It is recommended to drink between 3-4 liters of water daily. Your body will need it to stay hydrated. Hot drinks like coca leaf tea are highly recommended. Soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (not fried or heavy) are also a good option. Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are easy-to-digest options. Generally, all foods that are easy to digest. Do not drink alcohol or smoke.
Try to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid excessive exercise. Keep your body at an appropriate temperature by wearing warm clothing to protect against the cold. During the acclimatization process, there’s a general rule: eat what you need and drink plenty of fluids.
✓ Medical Restrictions:
- Customers must inform their travel agencies about any medical restrictions they may have before their trip. Some examples of medical restrictions include: allergies, special diets, any medications the customer is currently taking, and health issues. In the case of severe medical restrictions, we recommend consulting with your doctor to get approval to participate in the trek. The information you provide will be very important as it will help us design a plan to make your trip more enjoyable and worry-free.
✓ Water:
- After our first lunch, we will provide boiled water until the end of the trek. For this, you will need to bring a water bottle, which you will carry with you and use throughout the trek.
- We strongly recommend using water bottles (canteens) to preserve and protect the trail since plastic water bottles often have a negative environmental impact, especially when recycling isn’t properly managed on the route.
If you wish to buy water during the trek, you can do so on the first, second, and fourth days. You can also bring your own water purification tablets or water filter. However, previous treks have taught us that customers who opted for these alternatives often suffered from stomach pains. Therefore, we recommend filling your canteen with the boiled water we provide.
✓ Lost Items:
- Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and remember to collect everything once you exit our transport, campsites, or restaurants. You are solely responsible for your belongings during the tour.
Definitely! The Lares Trek is an excellent option in Cusco, taking you through stunning trails, small villages full of living culture, and, of course, to the world wonder of Machu Picchu. Throughout the trek, you’ll have the opportunity to connect with the high Andean people and learn about their lifestyle, traditions, and language. It’s known as “The Ultimate Cultural Route” for a reason. Don’t miss out on this unique experience!
The Inca Trail is absolutely worth it. According to National Geographic, it’s one of the best hikes in the world. Why? Because it allows you to:
- Walk along ancient Inca paths.
- Visit archaeological sites exclusive to this route.
- Learn about the fascinating Inca culture.
- Experience some of the most beautiful landscapes of the Andes.
- Discover unique flora and fauna.
- Sleep under the stars in the heart of the Andes.
- Enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, only accessible via this route.
- Explore one of the New Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu.
The Lares Trek is located between the mountains surrounding the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the Cusco region, Peru. This alternative route to the Inca Trail crosses a variety of stunning landscapes, including glacial lakes, mountain passes, the relaxing hot springs of Lares, traditional Andean villages, and a series of endemic ecosystems of the Andes.
Of course! If you are vegetarian, vegan, or have any food allergies, just let us know when you make your reservation. Our professional team will organize and coordinate suitable meal options for you at no additional cost.
It’s highly recommended to bring your own snacks, which you can purchase in advance in the city of Cusco or Calca, or at the very least in Ollantaytambo. During the first two days of the trek, you will find only small stalls selling basic snacks and some rehydrating drinks. It’s important to have cash in “Soles” for purchases in these places.
There is no rule prohibiting children under 12 or adults over 60 from doing the Lares Trek. However, as a responsible agency, BESTREKS recommends that children be at least 12 years old and adults no older than 55. That said, anyone can do the trek as long as they meet the following recommendations:
- Minors must always be accompanied by a responsible adult to ensure their safety.
- If you’re over 50, it’s essential to be in good health, have physical stamina, and undergo a medical checkup before doing the trek.
- In both cases, it’s recommended to acclimatize for at least 3 days in the city of Cusco.
- If you need any special personal medication, take it with you at all times and inform the sales staff and guide before starting the trek.
Absolutely! While the trek isn’t extremely difficult, the altitude can present a challenge. Once your reservation is confirmed, you’ll need to start preparing for the altitude. We’ve designed some recommendations to help you get ready:
- Cardiovascular Exercises: It’s important to build up your respiratory and cardiovascular endurance, as you will be hiking at over 4,000 meters (13,120 feet) above sea level, where the oxygen concentration is lower.
- Strengthen Your Muscles: Even though your main luggage (up to 6 kg) will be carried by our horses and muleteers, you’ll need to carry your personal items in a daypack. Each day, you’ll walk for about six hours, so it’s recommended to strengthen your legs and back.
- Practice Trekking or Mountaineering: In the months leading up to your adventure, you can do walks of increasing difficulty to adapt to the physical effort and get familiar with similar activities.
- Prepare Mentally: Many people overlook this, but it’s crucial. Remember that this is a challenge with physical and emotional hurdles, so maintaining a positive attitude is key to fully enjoying the experience.
Most people say that a relatively good physical condition is needed for the Lares Trek. It’s not that the trek itself is extremely hard, but rather a matter of preparing for the altitude.
The Lares Trek doesn’t usually sell out since it’s less crowded than other routes. However, it’s still recommended to book as early as possible to ensure the tour operator can accommodate your desired dates. If you wait until the last minute, other routes might be fully booked, and there might not be enough staff available to arrange the Lares Trek.
The Lares Trek is safe if you take the necessary precautions and prepare properly. Most tourists enjoy the trek without any serious incidents, but it’s important to be aware of the risks related to altitude and the changing conditions of the terrain. If you follow the safety tips, the trek is an incredible experience.
On average, you’ll be walking for about 6-7 hours per day. The actual time can vary depending on your physical condition, the pace of your group, and individual habits (e.g., if you’re an avid photographer, it might take longer). Our trekking guides are experienced and can adjust the plan to meet the needs of your group.
The best time to do the Lares Trek is during the dry season (May to October), as the chances of rain are minimal. This makes the trail safer and more comfortable, with sunny days and cold nights, and clearer views of the mountains. The rainy season (December to February) is less ideal due to slippery trails, but it’s still possible to do the trek if you’re prepared.
The most common way to get to Cusco is by flying into Lima, the capital of Peru, and then taking a national flight to Cusco. A flight from Lima to Cusco takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. There are several airlines that operate this route, such as LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air. If you prefer not to fly, you can take a bus from Lima to Cusco, but the trip can take between 20 and 24 hours, so flying is recommended for convenience and time-saving.
It’s recommended to spend at least 2-3 days in Cusco before starting the trek. During this time, you can rest, take it easy, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Explore the city with light activities to avoid overexerting yourself during those first days.
Supportive shoes that cover the ankle are highly recommended, especially for those not accustomed to long hikes or rough terrain. Steep slopes and rocky paths require stability, and ankle support helps prevent twists or injuries. High-cut boots are ideal for this.
Trekking poles are not mandatory, but they are highly recommended. They help reduce pressure on the knees, especially on steep ascents and descents. Poles provide stability and help control your speed, reducing the risk of falls or slips.
All non-essential luggage should be left in Cusco. Most hotels in Cusco offer luggage storage. If you don’t have a place to store your luggage, you can leave it in our offices, and we’ll make sure it’s securely stored.
Many passengers say the food is one of the highlights of their trip. Our chefs are professionally trained and do an excellent job preparing amazing meals. We’ve worked with chefs and nutritionists to create the best menu for the Lares Trek, ensuring you have plenty of energy for each day. If you have any allergies or dietary preferences, just let us know in advance, and we’ll make sure you’re well-fed during the trek.
