Description

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is the most impressive hike in South America.

Along its 44 km (27.3 miles) of Inca trail, you will encounter various archaeological sites, breathtaking views of towering mountains and glaciers, inter-Andean valleys, and subtropical forests. Microclimates ranging from cold mountain passes to the warm high jungle await you, showcasing a diverse array of flora and fauna.

Embarking on this 4-day adventure through the mountains and lush jungle, your journey begins in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in the picturesque community of Piscacucho, approximately three hours from Cusco. You will witness fascinating archaeological sites such as Patallaqta and ascend to the highest point of the trek, Dead Woman’s Pass, before descending into the tropical jungle where the wonder of Machu Picchu awaits.

Along the way, you will observe truly impressive local flora and fauna, including more than 190 species of orchids, 423 species of birds, and 53 species of mammals. You might even spot the Andean spectacled bear, the inspiration for Paddington. The route also includes visits to remarkable archaeological sites such as Runkurakay, Sayaqmarka, Phuyupatamarka, Intipata, Wiñay Wayna, and Inti Punku (Sun Gate). Entering Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate is a privilege reserved exclusively for those who hike the Inca Trail.

Today marks the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime on the Classic Inca Trail! Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco in our private transport at 4:30 a.m. From there, we will travel to Piscacucho, known as Kilometer 82, where the Classic Inca Trail begins. Along the way, we will stop for breakfast in Ollantaytambo around 6:30 a.m. to fuel up for our first big day.

Upon arrival at KM 82 (8:30 a.m.), we will take some time to get organized, use the restrooms, apply sunscreen and insect repellent, and make any final preparations. Here, we will also meet our entire trekking team, including our cooks and porters, who will accompany us throughout this exciting adventure. Your guide will ensure you have the best experience and take home unforgettable memories of the sacred mountains. At this point, you will hand over your duffel bag to the porters, keeping only a small backpack with the essentials you’ll need during the hike.

Once at the Inca Trail checkpoint, be ready to show your passport and student ID (if you booked as a student). Your guide will have all the necessary permits and tickets.

At the starting point of the trail (2,720 m / 8,923 ft), we will cross the Vilcanota River and follow a scenic route. The first day is relatively easy, serving as a warm-up along undulating “Inca flat terrain.” You will enjoy stunning views of the Inca fortress of Huillca Raccay, the vast and impressive Inca site of Patallaqta, the Urubamba mountain range that separates the jungle, and the breathtaking snow-capped peak of Veronica (5,860 m / 19,225 ft), also known as W’akay Willca.

We will stop for our first gourmet lunch in Hatunchaca, after which we will hike for just two more hours to reach our campsite. Our first camp is located about two hours past the small village of Wayllabamba (3,000 m / 9,842 ft), situated in a temperate valley of the same name. Nighttime temperatures can drop as low as 5ºC (41ºF), depending on the season, with colder nights occurring during the dry season (May to September).

Upon arrival at the campsite, afternoon tea and snacks will be waiting for you. Enjoy a hot drink and settle into your tents, which will already be set up for you.

Make sure your backpack is as light as possible, as today is the most challenging day of the hike. You will begin a steep ascent to the highest pass, Abra de Warmiwañuska, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass, at 4,220 m / 13,779 ft. On this day, you will feel a true sense of achievement upon reaching the summit!

We will ascend for more than four hours along the original Inca Trail, passing through different microclimates and breathtaking views of stunning landscapes and mountains. This is one of the longest days, but the natural beauty will make it worth it. We will pass through many archaeological sites, untouched Inca trails, tunnels, and a great diversity of microclimates, including inter-Andean valleys and cloud forests filled with birds and hundreds of types of orchids.

After breakfast, we will gradually ascend to Runkurakay, an archaeological site located midway up the mountain with a strategic view of the valley. After our visit here, we will complete the last climb to the second-highest pass of the trail, Runkurakay Pass (3,970 m / 13,024 ft), where we will see the cloud forest stretching like a green mantle between the valleys. From the pass, we will descend into the next valley until we reach the archaeological site of Sayaqmarka (3,600 m / 11,811 ft), known as “The Dominant Town” due to its commanding position over the surrounding valleys. We continue descending to our lunch spot in Chakicocha. Then, we will hike through breathtaking landscapes, passing countless species of orchids, tunnels, and Inca foundations that reach up to 10 meters deep.

We will hike for an hour and a half until we reach the last summit of the trail, Phuyupatamarka (3,650 m / 11,975 ft). From here, you can enjoy stunning views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Next, we will visit the archaeological site of Phuyupatamarka (Town Above the Clouds), from where you will get your first glimpse of Machu Picchu Mountain, surrounded by the Urubamba Mountain Range.

Then, surrounded by lush vegetation and birdsong, we will descend for two and a half hours to the archaeological site of Inti Pata (Sun Terraces), an incredible agricultural site with large terraces. From here, you will get the most breathtaking panoramic view of the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the Urubamba River, which winds through the valley like a serpent among the towering mountains.

Thirty minutes of hiking remain until we reach our campsite near the archaeological site of Wiñaywayna. This complex, whose name means “Forever Young,” is considered the most impressive of the entire route, aside from Machu Picchu itself.

At 5:00 p.m., you will have a guided tour of the Wiñaywayna archaeological site. Once again, the guide’s insightful explanations will bring this ancient site to life, helping you imagine what life was like here centuries ago. You will discover water fountains, sacred sites dedicated to natural deities such as the Rainbow Temple, and impressive agricultural terraces.

Before ending the day, we will enjoy a small celebration with our entire team of porters and cooks who have accompanied us on the journey. Remember that they have worked very hard to ensure your comfort and safety over the past few days. After sharing this special moment, we thank them for their care and dedication. Naturally, you may also show your appreciation with some tips, which are customary on the routes to Machu Picchu. Here, we say farewell to our cooks and porters.

After our pleasant celebration, we recommend going to bed early because the next day, we start very early. The Wonder of the World, Machu Picchu, awaits us in all its splendor.

  • Tipping is a common practice in the tourism industry and is highly appreciated by the hardworking team that supports your trek. While we ensure fair wages for our staff, a tip is a meaningful way to show appreciation for their dedication and excellent service.

  • Contributes to the local economy, particularly in remote communities.
  • Encourages continued high-quality service and professionalism.
  • Strengthens the connection between hikers and the support team.

ESSENTIALS:

  • Original Passport: If you booked your trip with an old passport and have since renewed it, your passport number has likely changed. Please inform us so we can update this information. This modification must be made at least 10 days before your trip to Peru. As soon as you receive your new passport, notify Bestreks agency. Otherwise, last-minute updates may incur additional costs and complications. Ensure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your trip.

  • Student ID: If you booked your trip with a student discount using an ISIC card, you must bring your original and valid CIIU student card (no copies, no expired IDs). This document must be presented at checkpoint controls along the route. Without it, you will not be allowed to enter the Inca Trail or Machu Picchu.

  • Backpack: Choose a small, ergonomic backpack for comfortable hiking. At Machu Picchu, bags larger than 25 liters are not allowed and must be stored outside.

  • Water Storage: Carry 1.5 to 2 liters of water. Consider using a Camelbak or a similar hydration system. A water bottle that keeps liquids cool is highly recommended.

  • Hiking Boots: Select lightweight, comfortable, and well-fitted hiking boots. They should not be too tight or too loose and should allow your toes to move freely.

  • Headlamp: Essential for early morning or late evening hikes. A headlamp is crucial for the Inca Trail, providing visibility while keeping your hands free. When choosing one, consider brightness, weight, and comfort.

  • We also accept credit/debit card payments and IZIPAY, both online and in person, with an additional 5% service fee applied by our payment gateway (Niubiz and IZIPAY).

✓ Customer Pickup

  • All pickups are conducted within Cusco city. We recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location.
  • Our guide or staff will confirm your pickup time one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, pickup times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Cusco is an old city with many narrow and cobblestone streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are inaccessible by vehicle or located on steep hills, making luggage transport difficult. We highly recommend choosing accommodations with easy access.

✓ Health

  • If you have medical restrictions for any of the activities in your reservation, consult your doctor about the risks before your trip.

✓ Weather

  • Cusco’s weather is unpredictable. The dry season runs from April to October, but it can still rain in June or be sunny in December.

✓ Regardless of the month you travel, bring rain gear, including:

  • Waterproof jacket and pants
  • Poncho
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Many people forget gloves, but cold and humidity can make the hike uncomfortable.
  • The Andes have multiple microclimates, so layering is essential. Also, bring a warm jacket, as nights can be very cold.

✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Issues

  • If you are arriving in Cusco from a low-altitude location, we recommend arriving at least two days before your trek.

✓ Altitude sickness (soroche):

  • Symptoms include headaches and nausea. Over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Diamox, Sorojchi Pill, or Alti Vital can help reduce symptoms. If symptoms persist, oxygen may be required. Our team is equipped to assist you if needed.

✓ Stomach issues: Drink three to four liters of water daily. We recommend:

  • Hot drinks like coca leaf tea
  • Soups, vegetables, and light carbohydrates
  • Sweets, chocolate, cookies, and fruits

Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Other recommendations:

  • Sleep at least eight hours
  • Avoid excessive exercise
  • Stay warm to prevent cold exposure

✓ Medical Restrictions

  • Clients must inform their travel agency of any medical conditions before the trip.

Examples of medical restrictions include:

  • Allergies
  • Special diets
  • Medications you are currently taking
  • Health conditions

For severe medical restrictions, consult your doctor before joining the trek. This information helps us design a plan to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

✓ Water

  • On the first day, clients must bring their own water, which can be purchased in Cusco or at Km. 82.
  • From the first lunch onward, we will provide boiled water until the end of the trek. You must bring a reusable water bottle to minimize plastic waste and protect the environment.
  • If you wish to buy water during the trek, you can do so on the first, second, and fourth days in Machu Picchu. You may also bring water purification tablets or a filter, but past travelers who used these alternatives often experienced stomach issues. We strongly recommend drinking the boiled water we provide.

✓ Lost Items

  • Please be mindful of where you leave your belongings and ensure you collect everything before leaving our transport, campsites, or restaurants.

You are solely responsible for your personal items during the tour.

We can say that the Inca Trail is 100% worth it. It is one of the best hikes in the world, according to National Geographic and many other sources. On this incredible route, you will:

  • Walk along ancient Inca paths that are hundreds of years old.
  • Visit many archaeological sites that can only be seen on this route.
  • Learn a lot about the fascinating ancient Inca culture.
  • Hike through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Andes Mountains.
  • Discover unique flora and fauna.
  • Sleep in the arms of Mother Nature in the middle of the Andes.
  • Enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, only possible on this route.
  • Explore one of the New Seven Wonders of the World: Machu Picchu.

The Inca Trail is the most popular hike in South America, with only 500 permits sold per day. We recommend booking your spot as soon as possible:

  • At least 3 months in advance for the low season (November to March).
  • At least 6 months in advance for the high season (April to October).

Note: Even if you book before these suggested periods, we cannot guarantee your place on the trail, as it is uncertain exactly when permits will sell out.

This question is often difficult to answer. The Inca Trail will amaze you whether it’s sunny, rainy, windy, or cold. You must have the right gear and always be prepared for any weather conditions. The Inca Trail is located in the cloud forest, known for having the most unpredictable weather in Peru and possibly in the world.

  • The best months to hike and visit Machu Picchu are from April to October.
  • The driest months are May, June, July, and August. However, these are also the busiest months.
  • The rainy season begins in November and lasts until March. However, it is still possible to have weeks without rain.
  • The Inca Trail remains closed in February due to heavy rains and trail maintenance.

The most common way to reach Cusco is to fly internationally to Lima (the capital of Peru) and then take a domestic flight to Cusco.

  1. Take a flight from your home country to Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, Peru’s main international hub.
  2. From Lima, take a domestic flight to Cusco, which takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes. Airlines operating this route include LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air.
  3. If you prefer not to fly, you can take a bus from Lima to Cusco, which takes 20 to 24 hours. However, flying is recommended for comfort and time-saving.

If you’re coming from neighboring countries like Chile, Argentina, Colombia, or Ecuador, you may find direct flights to Cusco from major cities, though these flights are less frequent than those to Lima.

It is very important to acclimate properly before starting the hike. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least 2 days before starting the trek.

  • If you have already been at high altitudes in Peru before arriving in Cusco, we suggest resting at least 1 day in Cusco before your hike to recover.

While no specific training is required, we recommend physical preparation by:

  • Exercising on a treadmill with an incline setting.
  • Climbing stairs or using a stair climber.

Keep in mind that you should spend at least 2 days in Cusco before your hike to adjust to the altitude.

We highly recommend wearing lightweight trekking shoes.

  • Ankle-support boots are very useful, especially for beginners, as you will be climbing and descending many Inca-built staircases.
  • Trekking poles are always useful, especially on this trail.
  • The terrain varies in altitude and is not always flat.
  • Using trekking poles reduces pressure on your knees and helps with steep climbs.

Our trekking poles are adjustable, so you can shorten them when not in use.

  • If you bring your own poles, they must have rubber tips, or the park rangers will not allow them.
  • If you forget them, you can buy rubber tips in Cusco.

All luggage not needed for the trek should stay in Cusco.

  • Hotels in Cusco are used to storing luggage for travelers.
  • If you have no place to store your bags, you can leave them in our office until you return.
  • We will keep your luggage safe, so don’t worry!

We offer a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes, including:

  • Rice, chicken, beef, salads, potatoes, vegetables, and fresh fruits.
  • Delicious vegetarian options and special dietary accommodations.

Our local chef prepares everything fresh, and we ensure proper preparation for all dietary requests.

  • The Classic Inca Trail is closed in February for maintenance and due to heavy rains.
  • The trail may also close unexpectedly due to bad weather or unforeseen circumstances.
  • Before planning your hike, check the latest closure updates.
  • Only authorized and registered local tour operators can book Inca Trail permits in Cusco.
  • You cannot book permits yourself.
  • You must hike with a tour guide, chef, and porters.
  • No, you cannot enter the Inca Trail without a registered tour company.
  • You must hike with a licensed guide, chef, and porters.
