The Most Epic Legendary Inca Journey

Embark on a legendary adventure through the ancient trails of the Incas, exploring breathtaking landscapes, hidden ruins, and natural wonders that will leave you in awe. From the mystical Choquequirao to the majestic Machu Picchu.

Everyone has heard of Machu Picchu, but what about Choquequirao? It is just as spectacular, yet far less visited. Discover these two great architectural wonders of the Incas on a 9-day trek that will push your physical and mental limits, leaving you completely renewed.

If you’re addicted to physical activity, love nature, and are passionate about the history of ancient civilizations, this adventure is perfect for you. This route was chosen in 2015 by National Geographic as one of the most beautiful in the entire world due to the archaeological significance of Choquequirao and Machu Picchu, which are the largest and best-preserved Inca sites in all of South America. The natural beauty in this part of the world is simply breathtaking.

The difficulty level of this trek is comparable to the hike to Everest Base Camp, making it unsuitable for the faint-hearted. We highly recommend Peru’s most fascinating trek—the question is, are you ready for the challenge?

If you want to travel back in time through ancient trails and visit two of the most incredible destinations in the world, join the expedition to Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.

Astonishing archaeological complexes and breathtaking routes. Whether you’re traveling as a couple or in a group, we take care of planning every detail so you can enjoy an unforgettable experience.

Leave modern life and daily worries behind, and get ready for a journey through time, walking the ancient stone streets of Choquequirao and Machu Picchu.

Imagine a way of life where the community was the fundamental pillar, with a deep love and respect for Mother Nature, known in the Andes as Pachamama. This special connection between the Incas and their environment allowed the construction of true wonders of architecture and engineering.

Huge stone cities settled high in the mountains. Inca aqueducts that still function more than 500 years later. Agricultural terraces built on steep slopes, optimizing cultivation in the heart of the mountains. You will witness these impressive feats as you walk part of the world-famous Classic Inca Trail, heading towards Machu Picchu.

Without a doubt, this is one of the most amazing routes in one of the most impressive tourist destinations on the planet. Pack your backpack and get your adventurous spirit ready… The journey of your life awaits you!

We will start early this morning when we pick you up from your hotel and leave Cusco around 5:30 a.m. We will drive for approximately 4 hours to the picturesque community of Cachora, where we will have the opportunity to buy some last-minute snacks and supplies before continuing to Capuliyoc (2,915 m / 9,561 ft). Upon arrival at Capuliyoc, we will have our first views of the beautiful Apurímac Valley stretching below us, as well as the surrounding snow-capped peaks of Padrayoc and Wayna Cachora.
Here we will meet our muleteers and our horses. At the Capuliyoc viewpoint, before starting our adventure, we will pack the horses. The beginning of our hike is gentle and smooth through the Apurímac Canyon, a steep 3-hour descent to the small village of Chiquisca (1,836 m / 6,023 ft), where we will have our lunch.
After lunch and a short rest, we will continue for another 1 hour and 20 minutes of hiking until we reach Playa Rosalina, where our first campsite is located, right next to the roaring Apurímac River (1,550 m / 5,084 ft).

The snowy mountains will soon reappear, reminding you of their power. Whether it is sunny or cloudy, you will enjoy a spectacular view.

One of our favorite parts of the fourth day is waking up on the mountainside and listening to the sounds of the forest and birds. It is truly a great experience and really strengthens your bond with Mother Nature or Pachamama.
This part of the trail is historically significant due to the many ruins that can be found along the way. We will pass by the impressive Inca mines, called Minas Victoria, where silver was once extracted. Then, we will head toward the San Juan Pass (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). From this location, we will have a stunning view of Salkantay Mountain and Humantay Mountain.
First, we will cross the intriguing cloud forest and then the Andean Puna, known for its famous Ichu grass. As we get closer to the top, we will have the opportunity to walk along some original paved Inca trails. We will enjoy our lunch while taking in the breathtaking views of Choquetakarpo and Padrayoc mountains. If you haven’t seen condors by this point, you may have a chance here, depending on the season.
Finally, we will head downhill for 3 hours to our Yanama campsite (3,600 m / 11,811 ft). This is a small community nestled in a vast valley. As always, a delicious dinner will await us before another beautiful night in the mountains.

If your student ID does not meet these requirements, you may be denied entry to Machu Picchu and will have to pay the full ticket price.

Before booking your Machu Picchu trip as a student, make sure your ID meets Peruvian government standards.

✓ Informational Meeting or Briefing

  • All informational meetings and briefings take place the afternoon before your trip at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 6:00 p.m. During the meeting, your guide will give you the duffel bag. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

If you are unable to attend, you must coordinate another time via email or phone call.

✓ Payment of the Remaining Balance (in Cusco)

  • If you still have a pending balance, it must be paid one day before your trek/tour; otherwise, your reservation will not be confirmed.
  • If possible, we appreciate cash payments (USD or Peruvian soles) at our office in Cusco or during the briefing. You can withdraw money from various ATMs along Avenida El Sol.

We also accept credit/debit card payments via IZIPAY, online or in person, but there is a 5% service fee charged by Niubiz and IZIPAY.

Customer Pickup

  • All pickups are conducted within the city of Cusco. We recommend booking a hotel in the historic center for better accessibility.
  • Our guide or staff will confirm your pickup time the day before your tour. Due to traffic conditions, pickup times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.

Cusco is an old city with narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located in areas without vehicle access or on steep hills, making luggage transport difficult. We highly recommend booking an easily accessible accommodation.

Health

  • If you have medical restrictions for any activity included in your reservation, consult your doctor about potential risks before participating.

✓ Weather

The weather in Cusco is unpredictable.

  • The dry season runs from April to October, but it can still rain in June or be sunny in December.
  • Bring rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves.
  • Be prepared for various microclimates. Layered clothing is essential.
  • Nights will be cold, so bring a warm jacket.

Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Issues

If you are coming from sea level, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least two days before your trek to acclimate.

  • Altitude sickness:
Symptoms include headaches and nausea. Over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Diamox, Sorochi Pill, and Alti Vital can help. If symptoms persist, we have oxygen and trained staff available to assist you.
  • Stomach issues:
Drink 3-4 liters of water per day and opt for hot drinks like coca leaf tea. Stick to light meals such as soups, vegetables, and carbs. Avoid fried foods, alcohol, and smoking.

To better adapt to the altitude:

  • Get at least eight hours of sleep.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise.
  • Stay hydrated and eat only what’s necessary.

✓ Medical Restrictions

  • You must inform the agency of any medical conditions before your trip. This includes allergies, special diets, medications, and health issues.

If you have severe medical restrictions, consult your doctor before the trek. This information will help us ensure a safer and more comfortable experience for you.

✓ Water

  • Starting from the first lunch, we will provide you with boiled water until the end of the trek. You must bring a reusable bottle to refill throughout the hike.
  • To protect the environment, we strongly recommend canteens instead of plastic bottles.

If you want to buy bottled water, you can do so on days 1, 2, and 4 of the trek. You may also bring water purification tablets or a water filter, but previous experiences have shown that customers who chose these alternatives often suffered stomach issues. We strongly recommend drinking only the boiled water we provide.

✓ Lost Items

  • Please pay attention to where you leave your belongings and ensure you collect everything before leaving the transport, campsites, or restaurants.

You are solely responsible for your personal items during the tour.

Absolutely! The Choquequirao trek is one of the most impressive and challenging routes in Peru, and many travelers consider it one of the best trekking experiences in South America. Choquequirao, known as the “sister” of Machu Picchu, stands at over 3,050 meters above sea level, and the trek around it offers spectacular views of mountainous landscapes and glaciers.

Additionally, the route passes through rural communities that maintain ancestral traditions, giving you the opportunity to connect with the local culture. Although the trek is demanding due to the elevation gain and rugged terrain, the breathtaking scenery along the way makes the effort worthwhile. If you love challenges and nature in its purest form, this is an unforgettable experience.

The project to build a cable car connecting the town of Cachora to Marampata was never completed due to frequent landslides, and the plan was gradually abandoned. While a cable car would benefit tourism, it would also take away the significance of the hike, which is incredibly rewarding due to its landscapes, flora, and fauna.

While it is not considered a high-altitude trek compared to other routes in the Cusco region, it should not be underestimated. The highest point of the trek is the ruins of Choquequirao, at 3,050 m (10,007 ft).

What truly makes this trek challenging is the steep elevation changes. On the first day, you descend 1,500 meters; on the second day, you ascend more than 1,500 meters. After exploring the ruins, you must repeat the effort on the way back. Although the altitude at Choquequirao is not extreme by Cusco’s standards, it is still significantly high—almost twice the elevation of Denver, Colorado!

This trek does not usually sell out, as not many people undertake it. However, it is advisable to book as far in advance as possible to ensure the tour agency can organize everything for your preferred dates. If you wait until the last minute, the agency might be fully booked on other routes and may not have enough staff available for Choquequirao.

The trek to Choquequirao is safe if you prepare adequately and take the necessary precautions. Most travelers complete the route without serious incidents, but it is important to be aware of the risks associated with altitude and changing terrain conditions. By following safety recommendations, the trek is an incredible experience.

Even the fittest person will find the Choquequirao trek to be a challenge! Everyone planning to do this trek should engage in a training plan. Many older travelers successfully complete the trek, but they are in excellent physical shape and well-prepared.

Anyone who is not in good shape should train under the guidance of a medical and fitness professional. The training program will depend on each person’s fitness level and abilities. The main challenge of the Choquequirao trek is the steep inclines. In short, the better your physical condition, the easier and more enjoyable the trek will be.

The average trekking time per day is around 7-8 hours per person. The actual duration depends on your physical condition, the pace of your group members, and the habits of your team (for example, enthusiastic photographers may take longer).

Our Choquequirao trekking guides are experts in planning according to the personal needs of each group.

Since the Choquequirao trek is not overcrowded, weather conditions are the most important factor when choosing the best time to go.

  • Dry season (May to October): This is the best time to do the Choquequirao trek, as the chances of rain are minimal, making the trail safer and more comfortable. During these months, the weather is more stable, with sunny days and cold nights, allowing for clearer views of the mountains. Additionally, the trails will be less slippery, making the trek easier.
  • Rainy season (December to February): While it is still possible to do the trek during this time, expect wet and muddy conditions.

The most common way to reach Cusco is by taking an international flight to Lima (the capital of Peru) and then a domestic flight to Cusco. First, fly from your home country to Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, the main air travel hub in Peru.

Once in Lima, take a domestic flight to Cusco. The flight from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Several airlines operate this route, including LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air.

If you prefer not to fly, you can take a bus from Lima to Cusco, but this journey takes between 20 and 24 hours. Flying is recommended for convenience and time efficiency.

If you are coming from nearby countries such as Chile, Argentina, Colombia, or Ecuador, you may find direct flights to Cusco from major cities, although they are less frequent than flights to Lima.

  • At least 2-3 days in Cusco: If you arrive directly in Cusco, it is recommended to spend at least two days there before starting the trek. Use this time to rest, take it easy, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Light activities, such as short walks in the city center, are recommended, but avoid intense physical exertion during these first days.
  • If you have been at high altitudes before: If you have already spent time in other high-altitude areas of Peru, such as Arequipa, Puno, or the Sacred Valley, you may acclimate more quickly. In this case, one day in Cusco may be enough before starting the trek.

Boots with ankle support are highly recommended, especially for those who are not used to long hikes or rough terrain. The steep inclines and uneven rocky paths require stability, and good ankle support helps prevent sprains or injuries. High-top hiking boots are ideal for this trek.

Trekking poles are always useful for hikers, as they reduce pressure on the knees.

  • Less strain on the knees: Steep mountain terrain puts significant stress on your knees. Trekking poles help distribute effort, relieving pressure on the legs and reducing impact on the joints.
  • Greater stability: The trails to Choquequirao are often uneven, rocky, and steep. Poles provide extra support for both ascents and descents.
  • Easier ascents and descents: Going uphill, trekking poles allow you to push with your arms, easing the strain on your legs. On descents, they help control your pace and reduce the risk of slipping or falling.

Any luggage not needed for the trek should remain in Cusco. Most hotels in Cusco are accustomed to storing luggage for travelers.

If you do not have a place to store your luggage, you can leave it at our office until the end of your trek. We will ensure that your belongings are safely stored, so you don’t have to worry!

Many of our travelers say that the food is one of the highlights of their trip. Our professional chefs do an excellent job preparing incredible meals during the trek.

We understand the importance of proper nutrition during your adventure, as it provides the energy you need each day. Our chefs and trained nutritionists have designed the best menu for your Choquequirao trek.

Each meal includes a variety of options incorporating all food groups, with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. You will also get to try some delicious traditional dishes.

Dietary restrictions? No problem! If you inform us in advance, we will ensure that you receive meals tailored to your needs.

Additionally, every afternoon, we provide a snack with drinks and appetizers before dinner. Rest assured—you won’t go hungry on the Choquequirao trek!
