Day 1: Cusco | Tambomachay - Qoricocha Lake - Patabamba Community - Qencco
Your adventure begins early! At 6:00 a.m., we will pick you up from your hotel and head to the Inca site of Puca Pucara (3,700 m / 12,139 ft), just 20 minutes from Cusco. From there, we will begin a gradual uphill hike for about 1.5 hours until reaching the first pass at 4,100 m (13,451 ft), where you will be rewarded with spectacular views of two valleys.
To your right, you’ll see the city of Cusco, the ancient capital of the Incas, surrounded by majestic mountains. To your left, you’ll enjoy a stunning landscape of farmlands and Andean peaks. Your guide will share insights about the Incas, their arrival in this region, and the Spanish conquest. From this natural viewpoint, you will also spot two ancient archaeological sites in the valley below.
From the pass, we will continue for another 45 minutes towards the upper valley. After crossing a small stream, we will arrive at our lunch spot on the shores of Queullacocha Lake. This area, known as the high puna, is covered in ichu, a hardy Andean grass. Here, you can observe various bird species, including Andean geese and partridges.
After a well-deserved rest and lunch, we will resume our hike toward our campsite in the village of Quencco. The route takes us over a mountain ridge before descending along the shores of Qoricocha Lake (Golden Lake). This section takes approximately 2.5 hours, and upon reaching the village, we will be warmly welcomed by the locals.
Once in Quencco, you can enjoy a hot coca tea to relax. We will visit a local family to learn about their lifestyle and ancestral traditions. If you brought a small gift, this is a great moment to share it. Afterward, you’ll have time to rest and learn more about Andean culture from your guide.

✓ CLIENT PICK-UP
- All pick-ups are made within the city of Cusco. We recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location. Our guide or staff will confirm the pick-up time the day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pick-up time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco has narrow, cobbled streets, and some hotels and Airbnbs are in areas with no vehicle access. We recommend choosing easily accessible accommodations.
✓ HEALTH
- If you have medical restrictions for any activities included in your reservation, consult your doctor about the risks before taking the tour.
✓ WEATHER
- Cusco’s weather is unpredictable. The dry season runs from April to October, but it can still rain in June or be sunny in December. Be prepared with waterproof gear: jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves. Additionally, due to Andean microclimates, wear layered clothing to adjust to temperature changes and bring a warm jacket for cold nights.
✓ ALTITUDE SICKNESS (SOROCHE) AND STOMACH ISSUES
It is recommended to arrive in Cusco at least two days before the hike to acclimate.
- Altitude sickness: Symptoms include headaches and nausea. Over-the-counter medications such as Aspirin, Diamox, Sorochi Pill, or Alti Vital can help. If symptoms persist, we have oxygen and trained staff available for assistance.
- Stomach issues: Drink 3-4 liters of water daily, preferably hot beverages like coca tea. Eat soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates. Avoid fried or heavy foods, alcohol, and smoking.
Huchuy Qosqo comes from the Quechua compound word “Huchuy,” meaning “small,” and “Qosqo,” meaning Cusco. It refers to the archaeological capital of South America, known as the city of the Incas, collectively meaning “Little Cusco.”
- Exact location: Huchuy Qosqo is on the northern slope of the Sacred Valley, at an altitude of 3,600 meters, in the district of Lamay, Calca province.
- Distance: While it is often said to be 5 km from Calca, this is a straight-line distance. The hiking routes from Lamay or Tambomachay are longer, ranging between 7 and 10 km, depending on the starting point.
- Access: You can reach Huchuy Qosqo by hiking from Tambomachay (near Cusco) or from Lamay in the Sacred Valley.
Absolutely! If you are vegetarian, vegan, or have any food allergies, simply inform us when making your reservation. Our team will arrange suitable meal options for you at no extra cost.
It is highly recommended to bring your own snacks, which you can buy in Cusco or Calca, or as a last resort, in Ollantaytambo. During the first two days of trekking, you will only find small, improvised stalls selling basic snacks and some rehydration drinks. Make sure to carry cash in Peruvian soles for purchases.
There are no regulations prohibiting children under 12 or adults over 60 from doing the Huchuy Qosqo trek. However, as a responsible agency, BESTREKS recommends that children be at least 12 years old and that adults not exceed 55 years old. That said, anyone can participate as long as they meet the following recommendations:
- Minors must always be accompanied by a responsible adult to ensure their safety.
- If you are over 50, it is essential to be in good health, have physical endurance, and undergo a medical check-up before the trek.
- Acclimatization: At least 3 days in Cusco before the trek is recommended.
- Medical needs: If you require specific medications, bring them with you and inform our sales team and guide before starting the trek.
Yes, absolutely. While the route is not extremely difficult, the altitude can be a challenge. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
- Cardio exercises: Strengthen your respiratory and cardiovascular endurance, as you will ascend above 4,000 meters, where oxygen levels are lower.
- Strength training: Strengthen your legs and back, as you will be carrying a personal backpack and walking approximately six hours per day.
- Practice trekking or hiking: Train with progressively challenging hikes to adapt to physical exertion.
- Mental preparation: Keep a positive mindset, as this will help you enjoy the experience despite any physical challenges.
Most people say that you need to be in relatively good physical condition for the trek. The hike itself is not extremely difficult, but preparation for altitude is crucial.
The Huchuy Qosqo trek does not usually sell out, as it is not a highly frequented route. However, booking in advance is recommended to ensure that your chosen tour operator has enough time to organize your trek on the desired dates. Last-minute bookings may be challenging if the agency is fully booked with other treks.
Yes, the trek is safe if you prepare adequately and follow safety guidelines. Most tourists complete the hike without serious issues, but it’s important to be aware of altitude risks and changing trail conditions. By following safety recommendations, the trek is an incredible experience.
On average, you will walk 5-6 hours per day. The total duration depends on your physical condition, group members, and any specific needs (e.g., photographers may take longer). Our guides are experienced in adapting the trek to the group’s pace.
- Dry season (May to October): The best time for the trek, with minimal rain, making the trail safer and more comfortable. Days are sunny, nights are cold, and visibility is excellent.
- Rainy season (December to February): While the trek is still possible, the wet conditions can make the trail slippery and more challenging.
- By plane: The most common route is to fly to Lima (Peru’s capital) and then take a domestic flight to Cusco, which takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. Airlines include LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air.
- By bus: A bus ride from Lima to Cusco takes 20-24 hours, but flying is recommended for comfort and time savings.
- From other countries: Some direct flights to Cusco exist from neighboring countries (e.g., Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador), but they are less frequent than flights to Lima.
- At least 2-3 days in Cusco before starting the trek is recommended. During this time, take it easy and allow your body to adjust to the altitude.
- If you have been in other high-altitude areas (Arequipa, Puno, Sacred Valley) before arriving in Cusco, acclimatization may be faster, and 1 day in Cusco could be enough.
Yes. Ankle-supporting hiking boots are highly recommended, especially for those not used to long hikes or uneven terrain. The steep inclines and rocky paths require stability, and proper footwear can prevent injuries. High-top hiking boots are ideal.
Trekking poles are not mandatory but highly recommended as they help reduce knee strain and improve balance on uneven, rocky, and steep trails.
- For ascents: Poles help push with your arms, reducing leg fatigue.
- For descents: They provide control, reducing the risk of slipping or falling.
Any luggage that is not needed for the trek should remain in Cusco. Most hotels in Cusco offer free luggage storage. If you do not have a place to store your bags, you can leave them at our office until the trek is over—we will ensure they are kept safely.
Many of our travelers say the food is a highlight of their trip!
- Our professional chefs prepare delicious, nutritious meals using fresh, local ingredients.
- The menu includes a variety of food groups to provide the energy needed for trekking.
- You will have the chance to try traditional Peruvian dishes.
- If you have dietary restrictions (allergies, vegetarian, vegan), inform us in advance, and we will accommodate your needs at no extra cost.
- In addition to meals, we provide afternoon snacks and hot beverages before dinner.
