Description

“Sibinacocha Lagoon and Ausangate: Where the Sky Reflects in the Purity of the Andes”

The Sibinacocha to Ausangate Trek takes us to explore one of the most impressive places in the Andes Mountain Range, one of the highest, most peaceful, and fascinating areas of Peru.

The Apu Ausangate, standing at 6,372 m (20,905 ft), is the most representative mountain in Andean culture in Cusco. This majestic colossus is part of a solid group of mountains that have been revered for centuries as spiritual protectors of the Quechua people.

Throughout the journey, you will marvel at intensely turquoise lagoons, vast open fields, and stone forests, transforming this region into a truly otherworldly landscape. Here, nature remains untouched, offering a total escape from modern life and allowing you to deeply connect with Pachamama (Mother Earth).

The hike to Sibinacocha Lagoon and Ausangate Mountain is a spectacular adventure that allows you to enjoy unique Andean landscapes.

Throughout the journey, you will witness breathtaking sunsets over the eternal snow, towering rock peaks rising over 5,000 meters, and majestic glaciers feeding intensely colored lagoons.

Access to Sibinacocha Lagoon begins with a drive along a paved road to Sicuani, south of Cusco. From there, we take a gravel road until reaching Phinaya, the starting point of the hike. From this point, we will traverse Sibinacocha Lake, ascend mountains and high-altitude passes, and admire stunningly colored lagoons until reaching the majestic Ausangate. We will circle part of this sacred mountain before arriving at Pacchanta and finally returning to Cusco.

This six-day expedition requires good physical condition, as it involves hiking through high-altitude terrain.

Our experience as a travel operator on this route allows us to guarantee a safe and enjoyable adventure. With BESTREKS, you will experience a high-quality service, supported by expert guides who will accompany you every step of the way.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to visit Andean Quechua communities, where locals preserve their ancestral traditions, practicing community agriculture and raising llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas.

Embark on this unique experience and discover the magic of the Andes in its purest form.

Our day begins early, at 5:00 a.m., when we will pick you up from your hotel to start this unforgettable adventure. We will depart in our private vehicle toward the charming town of Tinki, enjoying the first glimpses of the Andean sunrise along the way.
Our first stop will be at the Huacarpay Lagoon viewpoint, where you can capture stunning photographs of its vibrant landscape, reflecting the sky and mountains. We will then continue to Tinki, where a delicious breakfast awaits us with the majestic and sacred Ausangate Mountain in the background. After another hour of travel, we will reach the starting point of our hike, where we will meet our team of muleteers and horses, ready to accompany us on this journey. The trail will take us through majestic glaciers.
We will pause for an outdoor lunch, enjoying the surroundings and possibly the company of local children. As we continue, we will encounter locals dressed in colorful traditional Andean attire, as well as herds of llamas and alpacas, living symbols of this ancient land.
Around 4:00 p.m., we will arrive at our first campsite, where everything will be ready to welcome you, with tents set up and your luggage waiting. But the day still holds a special treat—before dinner, we will head to the Pacchanta hot springs, where you can relax under an Andean sunset and a clear night sky, admiring the endless stars illuminating the Andes.

  • You will need a backpack to carry your gear, snacks, and water. Choose a comfortable backpack with a capacity of at least 30-40 liters.

✓ Water Storage

  • Carry 1.5 to 2 liters of water; consider using a Camelbak or a similar hydration system. Choosing a water bottle that keeps your water cold is essential.

✓ Informational Meeting or Briefing

These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you are unable to attend, you must coordinate another time via email or phone call.

✓ Payment of the Remaining Balance (in Cusco)

  • If you still have a pending balance, you must pay it one day before your trek or tour. Otherwise, your reservation will not be confirmed. If possible, we highly appreciate payment in cash (either in US dollars or local currency) at our office in Cusco or during the briefing. You can withdraw money from various ATMs along Avenida Sol (in both US dollars and Peruvian soles). You may also pay by credit/debit card or through IZIPAY, either online or in person, but a 5% service fee applies, charged by our payment gateways (Niubiz and IZIPAY).

✓ Client Pickup

  • Please note that all pickups take place within the city of Cusco, so we recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a convenient location. Our guide or staff will confirm your pickup time one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, pickup times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.
  • Cusco is an ancient city with many narrow, cobblestone streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets inaccessible by vehicle or on steep inclines, making luggage transport difficult. We highly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

✓ Health

  • If you have any medical restrictions for some or all activities included in your reservation, please consult your doctor and ask about the risks of participating in these activities.

✓ Weather

  • The weather in Cusco is unpredictable. The dry season typically lasts from April to October, but this does not mean it won’t rain in June or that the sun won’t shine in December. Be prepared—no matter which month you are trekking—by bringing rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves. Many people forget gloves, but the combination of cold and humidity can make hiking uncomfortable.

Additionally, be ready for four seasons in one day. Trekking in the Andes involves multiple microclimates, so you must be prepared. Layered clothing is always essential, as it allows you to adjust to sudden temperature changes. Also, bring a warm jacket for the cold nights.

✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Issues

For hikers coming from sea level, we recommend arriving at least two days before your trek to acclimate.

The two most common health issues among travelers in Cusco are:

  1. Altitude sickness (soroche): Symptoms include headaches and nausea. There are some over-the-counter medications that help minimize these symptoms, such as Aspirin, Diamox, Sorochi Pill, Alti Vital, among others. If symptoms persist, oxygen may be required. Our team is fully equipped and ready to assist if necessary.

  2. Stomach issues: We recommend drinking 3 to 4 liters of water per day to stay hydrated. Warm drinks, such as coca leaf tea, are especially beneficial. Light, easy-to-digest foods like soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (non-fried) are ideal. Sweets, chocolate, cookies, and fruit are also good options. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Try to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid excessive physical activity. Keep your body warm by wearing proper clothing. When adapting to the altitude, a general rule is: eat in moderation and drink plenty of fluids.

✓ Medical Restrictions

  • Clients must inform their travel agency of any medical restrictions before their trip. These may include allergies, special dietary needs, medications they are currently taking, or any other health concerns.

For severe medical conditions, we highly recommend consulting your doctor to ensure they approve your participation in the trek. The information you provide is crucial as it allows us to create a plan to make your trip more enjoyable and worry-free.

✓ Water

  • After our first lunch, we will provide boiled water for the remainder of the trek. For this reason, you must bring a water bottle to carry and use throughout the hike.
  • We strongly recommend using canteens to help preserve and protect the trail, as plastic water bottles often have a negative environmental impact, especially when not properly managed by waste collection services.
  • If you wish to purchase water during the trek, you will find opportunities to do so on the first, second, and fourth days. You may also bring water purification tablets or a filter, but from past experiences, we have found that many travelers who opted for these alternatives suffered from stomach issues. Therefore, we highly recommend refilling your canteen with the boiled water we provide.

✓ Lost Items

  • Please pay close attention to where you leave your belongings and make sure to collect everything before leaving our transportation, campsites, or restaurants. You are solely responsible for your personal items during the tour.

Absolutely! The Ausangate Trek is one of the most stunning and challenging routes in Peru, often considered one of the best trekking experiences in South America. The trek takes you around the sacred Ausangate Mountain (over 6,300 meters above sea level) and offers breathtaking mountain landscapes, glaciers, and colorful lagoons.

Along the way, you’ll pass through remote rural communities that have preserved ancient traditions, providing a unique cultural experience. Though demanding due to altitude and terrain, the unmatched natural beauty makes the effort worth it. If you love challenges and untouched nature, this trek is an unforgettable adventure.

On average, expect to hike 6 to 7 hours per day, though this may vary depending on your pace and terrain conditions.

  • The toughest days are Day 3 and Day 4, mainly due to the altitude and steep climbs.
  • Preparation is key! Ensure you have the right gear, fitness level, and altitude acclimatization for a smooth experience.

Yes! The Ausangate Trek is safe if you are properly prepared. While most trekkers enjoy the experience without major issues, here are some important considerations:

  • Altitude is the main challenge—acclimatization is crucial.
  • Weather conditions can change rapidly—proper gear is essential.
  • Guided tours are recommended for safety and convenience.
By following safety precautions, the Ausangate Trek is an incredible and rewarding adventure.

Weather conditions are a major factor in choosing the best time for your trek:

  • Dry Season (May to October) – Best time to trek!
    • Minimal rain, stable weather, clear skies, and great visibility.
    • Cold nights, but trails are safer and more comfortable.
  • Rainy Season (December to February) – Not ideal, but possible.
    • Muddy trails, unpredictable weather, and reduced visibility.
    • More challenging conditions, but fewer crowds.

To reach Cusco, most travelers:

  1. Fly internationally to Lima (Jorge Chávez International Airport, Peru).
  2. Take a domestic flight from Lima to Cusco (1 hour 20 min flight).
  3. If avoiding flights, a bus from Lima to Cusco takes 20-24 hours (not recommended due to long travel time).
  4. Some international flights from Chile, Argentina, Colombia, or Ecuador may go directly to Cusco but are less frequent.

Minimum: 2-3 days in Cusco before starting the trek.

  • Day 1-2: Take it easy—light walking, no intense activities.
  • If you’re already acclimated (e.g., coming from Arequipa, Puno, or the Sacred Valley), 1 day in Cusco may be enough.

Yes! Proper trekking boots with ankle support are highly recommended.

  • Why? The trek includes steep slopes and rocky trails, so good ankle support helps prevent injuries.

Not mandatory, but highly recommended.

  • Trekking poles help with stability on steep terrain.
  • They reduce knee strain, especially during descents.
  • They improve balance on rocky and uneven trails.
  • Any hotel in Cusco can store your luggage for free.
  • If you don’t have storage, you can leave your bags in our office—we’ll keep them safe until you return.

We provide freshly prepared, high-energy meals, including:

  • Traditional Peruvian dishes (rice, chicken, beef, potatoes, salads, fresh fruits, and vegetables).
  • Vegetarian and dietary options available upon request.
