× PERSONAL TREKKING GEAR & CLOTHING

× TRAVEL INSURANCE:

× ADDITIONAL COSTS:

  • Uncontrollable delays (weather conditions, itinerary changes due to safety concerns, illness, government policy changes, political instability/strikes, etc.).

✓ TIPPING YOUR CREW:

  • Tipping is customary in the tourism industry and for any excursion to Machu Picchu. Although we pay our team fair wages, an extra tip is always appreciated, especially considering the hard work they do. Normally, the group collects tips to distribute among the porters and chefs, and separately for the guide and assistant after the Machu Picchu visit.

✓ Why tipping is important:

  • Recognizes the worker’s effort.
  • Shows appreciation for excellent service.
  • Supports the local economy.
  • Encourages outstanding service by motivating staff.
  • Strengthens relationships between trekkers and the support team.
  • A meaningful way to thank porters, cooks, and guides who work tirelessly 24/7 to ensure your trek is comfortable and unforgettable.

✓ ORIGINAL PASSPORT

  • If you booked your trip with your old passport and have since renewed it, your passport number has likely changed. Please inform us so we can update this information. This modification must be made at least 10 days before your trip to Peru. As soon as you have your new passport, notify Bestreks of this change. Otherwise, updating it at the last minute may incur an additional cost. Ensure your passport is valid for the entire duration of your trip.

✓ STUDENT ID

  • Passengers who booked their trip using the discounted student rate must carry their valid and original ISIC or CIIU student card (not a copy, not expired). This document must be presented at checkpoints along the route. Unfortunately, if you do not carry your student ID, you will not be allowed to enter Machu Picchu or Huayna Picchu.

✓ BACKPACK

  • You will need a backpack to carry your gear, snacks, and water. Choose one that is comfortable and has a capacity of at least 30-40 liters.

✓ WATER STORAGE

  • Carry between 1.5 to 2 liters of water. Consider using a CamelBak or a similar hydration system. A water bottle that keeps water cold is essential.

✓ HIKING BOOTS

  • Lightweight, comfortable, and well-broken-in. Ensure your boots are neither too tight nor too loose. They should provide enough space for your toes to move comfortably.

✓ HEADLAMP

  • Essential for visibility during early mornings or late evenings. A vital piece of equipment, it will light your way in the dark while keeping your hands free for other tasks. When choosing a headlamp, consider brightness, weight, and comfort.

✓ Valid student ID for Machu Picchu

  • To obtain the student discount, travelers must have a valid ID with the following criteria:

✓ Note on the ISIC Card

  • Although the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is recognized in many countries, it is not accepted by the Peruvian government for student discounts at Machu Picchu. Just as a passport cannot be replaced by any other type of identification in international procedures, the student ID cannot be substituted by an ISIC or any other document for discounts in Peru.
The Peruvian government’s policy is strict regarding student accreditation. It is essential to present an ID that meets these criteria to qualify for student-priced tickets. Upon entering Machu Picchu, you will be required to show your physical student ID. If you do not meet these requirements when you arrive at Machu Picchu, there is a significant risk that you will be denied entry and have to pay the full ticket price, subject to availability. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your student ID complies with Peruvian regulations before booking your trip to Machu Picchu as a student.

You will still have access to the entrance tickets we purchased for you, a guided visit to Machu Picchu on your original itinerary date, a train ticket, and a bus ticket.
  • If you decide to stop for personal reasons after the hike has started, you will automatically lose all included services. Any expenses incurred during your return, such as food, transportation, or accommodation, will be your responsibility. However, you can meet the group in Machu Picchu for the visit, where you can use your entrance ticket, participate in the guided tour, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, and the train back to Ollantaytambo.
  • Events beyond our control that make any part of the trip impossible, such as strikes, protests, flight cancellations, weather conditions, or hotel or flight overbookings. In any of these cases, we will suggest alternative arrangements (if available) to make the trip possible. Any costs associated with these alternative arrangements will be the traveler’s responsibility.

✓ Recommendations

  • We strongly recommend that you fully understand all booking and cancellation policies before making your payment to ensure that your investment is protected and that you have a smooth booking experience for your Cantera Inca to Machu Picchu adventure.

✓ Briefing session

  • All briefings are held the afternoon before your trip begins at our main office in Cusco (or at your hotel) at 6:00 p.m. Your guide will also provide you with the duffel bag. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. If you are unable to attend, you must coordinate another time via email or phone call.

✓ Trek balance payment (in Cusco)

  • If you still have a pending balance, you must pay it one day before your trek/tour; otherwise, your trip reservation will not be confirmed. If possible, we would greatly appreciate it if you pay the trek/tour balance in cash, either in US dollars or Peruvian soles, at our office in Cusco or during the briefing. You can withdraw money from various ATMs along Avenida El Sol (in both US dollars and Peruvian soles). You can also pay by credit/debit card or through IZIPAY, either online or in person, but a 5% service fee will apply, issued by our payment gateway (Niubiz) and IZIPAY.

✓ Customer pickup

  • Please note that all pickups are done within the city of Cusco. We recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with a good location. Our guide or staff will confirm your pickup time one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, pickup times may vary by 30 to 45 minutes.

Cusco is an old city with many narrow, cobblestone streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located in areas without vehicle access or on steep inclines, making luggage transport difficult. We strongly recommend booking accommodation with easy access.

✓ Health

  • If you have medical restrictions for any of the activities in your booking, please consult your doctor about potential risks before participating.

✓ Weather

  • The weather in Cusco is unpredictable. The dry season generally lasts from April to October, but this does not mean it won’t rain in June or that the sun won’t shine in December. Be prepared for all conditions!
  • Regardless of the month you hike, bring rain gear that includes a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves. Many people forget gloves, but cold and moisture can make hiking uncomfortable.

Also, prepare for four seasons in one day. Andean treks involve different microclimates, so layering your clothes is essential. We highly recommend a warm jacket for cold nights.

✓ Altitude sickness (soroche) and stomach issues

  • If you are coming from sea level, we recommend arriving two days before your trek to allow your body to adjust.
  • The two most common health issues for visitors to Cusco are altitude sickness (soroche) and stomach discomfort due to slow digestion.
  • Altitude sickness symptoms include headaches and nausea. Some over-the-counter medications can help reduce symptoms, such as Aspirin, Diamox, Sorojchi Pills, and Alti Vital. If symptoms persist, oxygen is the next step. Our staff and equipment are ready to assist if needed.
  • For stomach issues, hydration is key—drink 3 to 4 liters of water per day. We recommend hot drinks like coca leaf tea, as well as soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (avoid fried or heavy foods). Candy, chocolate, cookies, and fruits are also good options. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

Try to sleep at least 8 hours and avoid excessive exercise. Keep warm to prevent temperature fluctuations. A general rule for adjusting to the altitude is: eat moderately and drink plenty of fluids.

✓ Medical restrictions

  • Clients must inform their travel agency of any medical restrictions before the trip begins. Some examples include allergies, special diets, medications, and health conditions.

If you have serious medical restrictions, we strongly recommend consulting with your doctor before participating in the trek. The information you provide will help us plan a safer and more comfortable trip for you.

✓ Water

  • From our first lunch onward, we will provide boiled water for the rest of the trek. You must bring a water bottle or hydration system to carry and use throughout the hike.
  • We strongly encourage using canteens to protect the environment. Disposable plastic bottles negatively impact the trail, especially if not properly recycled.

If you prefer, you can buy bottled water on the first, second, and fourth days of the trek. You may also bring water purification tablets or a water filter, but previous travelers who relied on these methods often experienced stomach issues. We recommend using the boiled water we provide.

✓ Lost items

  • Please pay close attention to where you leave your belongings and make sure to collect them before leaving our transportation, campsites, or restaurants. You are solely responsible for your items throughout the tour.

Definitely! The Cantera Inca tour is an excellent trekking option in Cusco. Not only will it take you through breathtaking trails and small villages full of living culture, but it will also allow you to visit and explore the world wonder of Machu Picchu. During the journey, you will have the opportunity to connect and share special moments with high-Andean villagers, who will welcome you with open arms and the warmth of their culture. You will learn about their lifestyle, traditions, and language. Without a doubt, the Cantera Inca tour is known as “The Ultimate Cultural Route” for a reason. Dare to live this unique experience!

The Cantera Inca tour is located among the mountains surrounding the Sacred Valley of the Incas in the Cusco region of Peru. This alternative trekking route to the Inca Trail crosses a variety of stunning landscapes, including glacial lagoons, mountain passes, traditional Andean villages, and a range of endemic Andean ecosystems.

Absolutely! If you are vegetarian, vegan, or have any food allergies, just inform us when making your reservation. Our team of professionals will organize and coordinate suitable meal options for you at no additional cost.

It is highly recommended to bring your own snacks, which you can purchase in advance in Cusco or, as a last resort, in Ollantaytambo. During the first two days of trekking, you will only find small improvised stalls selling basic snacks and some rehydrating drinks. To buy from these places, it is important to carry cash in “Soles.”

There is no rule prohibiting children under 12 or adults over 60 from doing the Cantera Inca tour. However, as a responsible agency, BESTREKS recommends that children be at least 12 years old and that adults not exceed 55. That said, anyone can do the trek as long as they follow these recommendations:

• Minors must always be accompanied by a responsible adult to ensure their safety.
• If you are over 50, it is essential to be in good health, have physical endurance, and undergo a medical check-up before the trek.
• In both cases, a prior acclimatization of at least three days in Cusco is recommended.
• If you require any special personal medication, carry it with you at all times and inform the sales staff and guide before starting the trek.

Definitely yes. Not because it is an extremely difficult route, but because, although it is considered a trail suitable for the general public in good physical condition, the altitude can be a challenge.
Once your reservation is confirmed, you should start preparing for the altitude. Here are some recommendations for proper preparation:

Do cardiovascular exercises: Strengthening your respiratory and cardiovascular endurance is important, as you will be ascending above 4,000 meters (13,100 feet), where lower oxygen levels will be a factor.
Strengthen your muscles: Although your main luggage (up to 6 kg) will be carried by our horses and muleteers, you will carry personal items in a travel backpack. Additionally, you will walk approximately six hours each day, so it is advisable to strengthen your legs and back.
Practice trekking or mountaineering: In the months leading up to the adventure, take hikes of increasing difficulty to adapt to the physical effort and familiarize yourself with similar activities.
Prepare mentally: Many people overlook this aspect, but it is crucial. Remember that this is a challenge that involves both physical and emotional obstacles, so maintaining a positive attitude will be key to fully enjoying the experience.

Most people say that being in relatively good physical condition is necessary for the trek. The hike itself is not extremely difficult, but it is more about ensuring that you take all possible precautions to prepare for the altitude.

The Cantera Inca trek does not usually sell out because not many people do it. However, it is advisable to book as early as possible to ensure that the travel agency you choose can organize the trek for your desired dates. If you wait until the last minute, they may be fully booked on other routes and not have enough staff available for the Cantera Inca route.

The Cantera Inca trek is safe as long as you consider these factors and prepare adequately. Most tourists who take the trek enjoy it without serious incidents, but it is important to be aware of the risks associated with altitude and changing terrain conditions. If you follow safety guidelines, the trek is an incredible experience.

The average trekking time per day is about 6-7 hours per person. In reality, the number of trekking hours depends on your physical condition, the other group members, and their habits (for example, enthusiastic photographers may take longer).
Our trekking guides on the Cantera Inca tour are also experts in planning according to the personal needs of the groups.

The Cantera Inca trek is relatively quiet in terms of crowds, so the weather and climate conditions are the most important factors to consider when choosing the best time to go.

Dry season (May to October): This is undoubtedly the best time to do the Cantera Inca trek, as the chances of rain are minimal, making the trail safer and more comfortable. During these months, the weather is more stable, with sunny days and cold nights, which enhances the experience and allows for clear mountain views. Additionally, the trails are less slippery, and the terrain is easier to navigate.
Rainy season (December to February): While it is not impossible to do the trek during the rainy season, it can be more challenging due to wet and muddy conditions.

The most common way to reach Cusco is by taking an international flight to Lima (Peru’s capital) and then a domestic flight to Cusco. First, take a flight from your home country to Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, which is Peru’s main international flight hub.
Once in Lima, you can take a domestic flight to Cusco, which lasts approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Several airlines offer this route, such as LATAM, Sky Airline, and Viva Air.
If you prefer not to fly, you can take a bus from Lima to Cusco, which takes between 20 and 24 hours. However, flying is recommended for convenience and time savings.

A minimum of 2-3 days in Cusco is recommended. If you arrive directly in Cusco, spend at least two days there before starting the trek. During this time, rest, take it easy, and allow your body to adjust to the altitude. Light exploration, such as gentle walks around the city center, is recommended to avoid intense physical effort in the first days.

Ankle-supporting shoes are highly recommended, especially for those not used to long walks or difficult terrain. The steep slopes and uneven stone paths require stability, and good ankle support will help prevent sprains or injuries. High-cut boots are ideal for this.

Trekking poles are always useful for hikers as they relieve knee pressure. On mountainous terrain with steep ascents and descents, significant strain can be placed on the knees. Poles help distribute the effort, reducing leg strain and joint impact.

Any luggage not needed for the trek should remain in Cusco. Most hotels in Cusco are used to and prepared for storing luggage. If you have nowhere to store your belongings, you can leave them at our offices until the trek is over. We will ensure that your luggage is safely stored, so there is no need to worry.

Many of our passengers say that food is one of the highlights of their trip. Our professionally trained chefs do an excellent job preparing incredible meals throughout the trek. We prioritize nutrition to provide the energy needed for each day. Meals include a variety of fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and you will also get to try some local dishes.
If you have any allergies or dietary preferences, just inform us before your trip, and we will ensure you are well-fed throughout the trek. Additionally, each afternoon, we provide snacks and drinks before dinner, so you won’t go hungry during the Cantera Inca trek.
