Day 1: Cusco | Ocongate - Upis Community - Arapa Pass – Yana Qocha
Our five-day adventure to Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain begins early. At 5:00 a.m., our expert guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco for a 3.5-hour private vehicle journey to the trailhead. Along the way, we’ll pass through colorful Andean villages and follow the road toward Puerto Maldonado. After about three hours, we’ll take a short break in Tinke (3,800 m / 12,467 ft) to use the restrooms and make any last-minute purchases. Then, we’ll continue for 30 more minutes on a dirt road until we reach Upis (4,250 m / 13,943 ft), the starting point of our trek.
Upon arrival, we’ll take time to organize our backpacks and duffel bags while our chef prepares a delicious breakfast with breathtaking views of the Vilcanota mountain range and the majestic Apu Ausangate. Meanwhile, our horsemen will pack and prepare all the necessary trekking equipment. Before setting off, our guide will introduce the expedition team that will accompany us on this incredible journey.
We’ll begin our trek along a trail that crosses potato and Andean grain fields, gradually entering the vast mountain plains. During the first three hours, we’ll cross small streams and walk on a gentle incline, passing traditional Andean houses built in ancestral style. As we move through ichu grasslands, we may see Andean gulls soaring overhead and small ponds that serve as a refuge for high-altitude birds.
Shortly before reaching the Upis community (4,400 m / 14,435 ft), we’ll come upon an open valley leading toward the glacier, where we’ll enjoy lunch with an unbeatable view of Ausangate Mountain (6,372 m / 20,900 ft).
After lunch, we’ll resume our trek, ascending for two hours to reach the Arapa Pass (4,800 m / 15,748 ft). From the summit, we’ll be rewarded with spectacular scenery: eroded mountains, vast valleys, and the imposing silhouette of Ausangate dominating the horizon. We’ll then descend a barren slope for 20 minutes, followed by a steeper descent of about 1.5 hours until we arrive at our first campsite: Yana Qocha (4,570 m / 14,993 ft).
This privileged campsite offers stunning mountain views and a well-deserved rest. We’ll have free time to relax or explore before enjoying the traditional tea time. Finally, after a delicious dinner, our guide will provide briefing for the second day before we rest under a spectacular starry sky.
