Day 1: Cusco | Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa – Humantay Lagoon
We will pick you up from your hotel around 4:30 a.m. and drive for approximately 2 hours to Anta – Mollepata. During the bus ride, you will observe the snow-capped mountains of Salkantay and Veronica, considered sacred gods by the Incas. Additionally, you will catch sight of the spectacular views of the highlands and low valleys with colorful landscapes.
After two hours of driving, we will make our first stop in the town of Mollepata, where you will find restrooms and breakfast. The journey will then continue to Challacancha, the starting point of our hike. There, we will meet our support staff, organize all the equipment, horses, and mules, and have an introductory briefing. At approximately 9:30 a.m., we will begin our hike to Soraypampa (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). The first section of the trail consists of paved rocky paths. Along the way, we will see an ancient water channel that still supplies water to the local inhabitants. The first stretch is 6 km, which we will complete in 3 hours to reach Soraypampa, where we will have lunch and set up our base camp.
After lunch and a short rest, we will continue hiking to Humantay Lagoon (4,200 m / 13,780 ft). This is a 4 km hike that will take approximately 3 hours round trip. Once we arrive at the lake, we can admire the Humantay glacier and the stunning sunset. Soraypampa is located in the middle of glacial valleys, and at night, the absence of ambient light makes it a perfect spot for stargazing.

After quickly packing, enjoying breakfast, and preparing for the day, we will begin our hike to the highest point of the Salkantay Trail (4,650 m / 15,255 ft). This 7 km stretch should take about 4 hours. During the ascent through the rocky valley, we can observe the magnificent Salkantay peak and might even spot chinchillas along the trail. Once we reach the summit, we will enjoy spectacular views of the mountains and the towering snow-capped peaks of Salkantay, Humantay, and Pumasillo.
Salkantay is considered the second-highest mountain in the Cusco region and one of the main Incan gods, known as “Apu Salkantay.” Reaching the summit is the most challenging part of the entire trek, but the achievement will be incredibly rewarding! We will then spend the next 3 hours descending along a rocky and gravel path to Huayracmachay, our lunch spot. In the afternoon, we will enter the upper part of the rainforest, also called the “cloud forest.” We will hike 9 km in 3 hours to reach Chaullay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft), our base camp. Llaqtapata is an archaeological site along the Salkantay trail that you will have the opportunity to visit on the fourth day. From Llaqtapata, you will enjoy a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from a unique perspective. We will hike uphill for 3 hours along the original Inca trail to reach the ruins. Once there, you will have plenty of time to take in the views of Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu. If the weather is clear, you may even see Salkantay Mountain again.

Day 5: Aguas Calientes | Km 104 – Chachabamba – Wiñay Wayna – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
Today is the famous Inca Trail you’ve been waiting for! You will wake up very early to have breakfast at the hotel at 5:00 a.m. After breakfast, your guide will pick you up from your hotel to start the hike. You will walk for about two hours along the train tracks and the Urubamba River, following a flat path until reaching Km 104 (2,000 m / 6,560 ft). At this point, your guide will give you your box lunch to carry in your backpack.
After crossing the Urubamba River on a picturesque pedestrian bridge, you will present your original passport at the checkpoint and visit your first Inca site nearby. Our first stop is a beautiful archaeological site called Chachabamba, where your guide will introduce you to the history of the Inca Trail. After exploring this stunning Inca site, we will walk along an ancient Inca trail, abandoned in the 16th century along with Machu Picchu.
The first section of the Inca Trail consists of a gradual incline for about 4 hours until reaching Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young”). This is one of the most beautiful Inca sites along the trail. Here, we will take some time to explore this impressive archaeological site, enjoy the spectacular views of the Andes, and have lunch with our box lunch. Then, we will continue hiking to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), where you will get your first breathtaking view of the Lost City of the Incas—an unforgettable experience!
We will arrive at the Sun Gate around 3:00 p.m., just as most of the crowds at Machu Picchu have started to leave. This will allow you to enjoy this place with fewer people and take in the stunning panoramic view of Machu Picchu from this unique vantage point. There are also a few important Inca sites between the Sun Gate and Machu Picchu, so be sure to walk slowly and take it all in.
Once at Machu Picchu, you will have time to take more photos from the viewing platforms (Guardhouse)—the perfect spot for iconic Machu Picchu postcard photos. Since we arrive in the late afternoon, most visitors will have already left, allowing you to capture beautiful photos with fewer people in the background. Take your time to enjoy this magical experience before taking the bus to Aguas Calientes, where you will check into your hotel.
After a delicious dinner, you will have some free time to explore this charming town, visit the hot springs, or simply relax at your hotel after such an exciting day.

Day 6: Aguas Calientes | Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco
Today is the long-awaited Machu Picchu day! You will need to wake up before dawn to beat the crowds and take the first bus—a 25-minute ride to the entrance of Machu Picchu.
Once inside, your guide will take you to a strategic viewpoint where you can admire the Inca architecture and take the best postcard-worthy photos of Machu Picchu. Then, you will begin a guided tour through the main sectors of the citadel, lasting approximately 2 hours. Throughout the tour, you will learn more about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.
At the end of the guided tour, you will have free time to continue taking photos and exploring any areas you have yet to visit. If you have booked a Huayna Picchu hike, your guide will show you where to start this trek, which takes about 2 hours round trip (must be reserved in advance, as spaces are limited, and it costs $60 USD per person).
Another hiking option is Machu Picchu Mountain, instead of Huayna Picchu. This hike is more challenging and takes at least 3 hours round trip (also with an additional cost of $60 USD per person).
After enjoying the exceptional views of Machu Picchu, take the bus back to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included). Depending on your train departure time, you may also have time for shopping, sightseeing, or visiting the museum or hot springs.
The Expedition train will take you back to Ollantaytambo at 2:55 p.m. or 3:20 p.m., following the spectacular Urubamba River. Near Aguas Calientes, the canyon narrows, and the river has many beautiful sections of whitewater rapids. Once back in Ollantaytambo, your driver will be waiting for you at the train station exit to take you back to Cusco by car. You can expect to arrive at your hotel around 7:30 p.m.

- Please note: All pickups take place within the city of Cusco. We recommend booking a hotel in the historic center with good accessibility. Our guide or staff will confirm your pickup time one day before the tour. Due to traffic conditions, the pickup time may vary by 30 to 45 minutes. Cusco is an ancient city with many narrow, cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs are located on streets without vehicle access or on steep inclines, making luggage transport difficult. We strongly recommend choosing accommodation with easy access.
✓ Lost Items:
- Please pay close attention to where you leave your belongings and ensure you collect everything before leaving our transportation, campsites, or restaurants. You are solely responsible for your belongings during the tour.
✓ Weather Conditions:
- The weather is unpredictable. The dry season in Cusco typically lasts from April to October, but rain can occur in June, and sunny days can appear in December. Be prepared for all conditions. Regardless of when you hike, bring rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and gloves. Many hikers forget gloves, but cold and moisture can make hiking uncomfortable.
Additionally, be ready for all four seasons. Trekking in the Andes involves various microclimates, so you should be well-prepared. Layering is essential to adjust to changing temperatures. Bring a warm jacket, as nights can be very cold.
✓ Altitude Sickness (Soroche) and Stomach Issues:
- For hikers coming from sea-level locations, we recommend arriving in Cusco at least two days before your trek. The two most common health issues among tourists in Cusco are altitude sickness (soroche) and stomach discomfort due to slow digestion.
✓ Altitude Sickness:
- Symptoms may include headaches and nausea. Some over-the-counter medications, such as Aspirin, Diamox, Soroichi Pill, or Alti Vital, can help minimize symptoms. If symptoms persist, oxygen may be necessary. We have the equipment and trained staff to assist hikers in such cases.
✓ Stomach Issues:
- It is recommended to drink 3-4 liters of water per day to stay hydrated. Hot beverages, such as coca leaf tea, are especially beneficial. Consume light, easy-to-digest foods such as soups, vegetables, and carbohydrates (avoid fried or heavy foods). Sweets, chocolates, cookies, and fruits are also good options. Avoid alcohol and smoking.
Ensure you sleep at least 8 hours per night and avoid excessive exercise. Keep your body warm with proper clothing to protect yourself from the cold. During altitude acclimatization, follow the general rule: eat as needed and drink plenty of fluids.
Salkantay is the second-highest mountain in the Cusco region, standing at 6,271 m / 20,574 ft. It is located in the Vilcabamba Mountain Range, 6 km west-northwest of Cusco, in the central Peruvian Andes. Salkantay means “Wild Mountain” and has been considered a sacred deity controlling the weather and fertility by locals since Inca times.
The Salkantay mountain has extreme weather conditions. During the day, temperatures can reach 25°C (77°F), while at night, they can drop to -10°C (14°F). However, this varies depending on the season.
Salkantay from October to March:
From October to March, the rainy season occurs. During these months, the days are cloudy (19°C / 66°F), and the nights are not as cold (4°C / 39°F) compared to the rest of the year. However, the frequency of rain increases significantly, making the trek more challenging.
Salkantay from April to September:
From April to September, it is the dry season. During these months, the days in Salkantay remain stable (20°C / 68°F). However, the nights have the lowest temperatures of the year (-10°C / 14°F). Despite this, the weather is less rainy, making the trek through the snow-covered mountains more feasible.
Most people travel to Cusco by air. Keep in mind that Cusco’s airport operates only domestic flights. Therefore, if you are flying from abroad directly to Lima, you will need to collect your luggage at the airport and re-check it for your flight to Cusco. There are four airlines offering round-trip flights between Lima and Cusco: LATAM Airlines, AVIANCA Airlines, and Star Peru. All these airlines offer similar flight schedules and services, but we generally recommend LATAM Airlines.
You also have the option of traveling to Cusco by land. However, keep in mind that the journey from Lima to Cusco takes approximately 24 hours.
It is very important to be well acclimatized before starting the trek. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least two days before your trek begins to help your body adjust and avoid possible altitude sickness issues during the hike. If you have already been in another high-altitude area in Peru before arriving in Cusco, we recommend resting for a day in Cusco to recover.
Although no specific training is required for trekking in Cusco, we suggest that the best way to physically prepare is by exercising on a treadmill, selecting steep incline settings, as well as going up and down stairs or using a stair climber. Keep in mind that you will need at least two days in Cusco before your trek start date.
We always recommend using the lightest possible trekking shoes. Ankle-supporting boots are very useful, especially for inexperienced hikers, as you will be climbing up and down many stairs built by our ancestors, the Incas.
Trekking poles are always helpful for hikers, especially when completing this trek. This is because many trails vary in altitude and are not always straight. Therefore, when walking on these trails, trekking poles can help relieve pressure on your knees and assist in climbing.
Additionally, our trekking poles are adjustable. So when you’re not using them, you can shorten them to avoid discomfort. If you plan to bring your own trekking poles, make sure they have rubber tips, or the park rangers will not allow you to use them. If you forgot to bring them from your home country, you can buy rubber tips in Cusco.
Any luggage that is not necessary for the trek should be left in Cusco. All hotels in Cusco are used to and prepared for storing luggage. If you don’t have a place to store your bags, you can leave them at our office until the end of your adventure. We will ensure your luggage is stored safely, so don’t worry!
We offer a variety of local superfoods and traditional Peruvian dishes, such as rice, chicken, beef, salads, potatoes, vegetables, and fresh fruits, all prepared by our local chef. We also provide excellent vegetarian options and accommodate specific dietary requests with proper preparation and good communication.
