ESNNA CODE

The ESNNA Program and Our Commitment

The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism has created a policy against sexual exploitation of children and adolescents (ESNNA). The ESNNA code and Explora Cusco have an agreement on joint actions to prevent and eradicate this problem.
Sexual exploitation is a violation of human rights and undermines the physical, social, and emotional development of children and adolescents affected by this situation. ESNNA can also manifest itself in various ways and contexts, such as: ESNNA in tourism and travel; ESNNA online (on the Internet and through the use of ICTs).

Sexual exploitation of girls, boys and adolescents in figures

In Peru

  • According to a 2015 estimate, 3.98% of the total Peruvian adult population reported having been a victim of sexual exploitation before turning 18.
  • It is estimated that nationwide, the number of minors between the ages of 10 and 17 exposed to potential sexual exploitation ranges from 14,000 to 26,000 women (2015).
  • Unfortunately, official figures on the situation of victims of SEC in Peru are difficult to access.

In the World

  • An estimated 20,000 victims of sexual exploitation in tourism and travel are found in Mexico, according to an estimate by ECPAT (2016).
  • 100,000 children and adolescents are victims of sexual exploitation (ESNNA) in the Philippines, according to an estimate by ECPAT (2016).
  • According to the most recent research on online sexual exploitation, 64.8% of victims of child sexual abuse material are girls (ECPAT, 2018).

Concrete Actions – ESNNA Code

Adherence to the ESNNA program’s Code of Conduct commits us to consistently implement a series of actions that are implemented and reinforced as part of our activities. Our office staff, as well as logistics staff (guides, cooks, drivers, and porters) are already duly trained to comply with the Code of Conduct. Tourists, whether domestic or foreign, are not offered any type of service, nor are any requests regarding child or adolescent sex tourism accepted, for both ethical and legal reasons. Along these same lines, we work together with our partners (hotels, restaurants, etc., and all their staff) to ensure the objectives and commitments of the ESNNA program are met in all sectors and stages of the tourism services we provide. All of us at Explora Cusco, as well as our partners in our operations, are committed to upholding the ESNNA Code of Conduct and reporting to the authorities when necessary. The actions of the ESNNA Code and Explora Cusco are highlighted and prioritized within our social responsibility policies. We seek to make tourism an activity that only benefits the region and the country, in accordance with the mission, vision, and corporate values.
